We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Program Director of the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) Program at AAAS. In this role, you will supervise program staff and support the Director in program visioning and implementation. DoSER builds on AAAS's long-standing commitment to relate scientific knowledge and technological development to the purposes and concerns of society at large, by facilitating communication between scientific and religious communities through a variety of engagement initiatives.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with the DoSER Program Director to shape the strategic and programmatic vision for DoSER and design new programmatic initiatives.
  • Directly supervise DoSER program staff and contracted scholars, including approximately 7 full-time staff and 1-2 interns per year.
  • Develop targeted fundraising strategy, serve as principal investigator for some program proposals, and work with AAAS leaders and the AAAS Office of Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships to develop a diverse grant portfolio for the program.
  • Oversee all project implementation, working with the DoSER Program Director and program colleagues to ensure that objectives are met.
  • Manage the program budget, finance, and administration, including contracts, financial reports, and personnel management.
  • Conduct strategic outreach and communication, including representing AAAS at domestic and international meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Cultivate partnerships and alliances with external organizations (religious groups from diverse faith traditions, academic institutions, etc.) and key stakeholders.
  • Communicate with scientists from diverse scientific fields and with representatives of diverse religious communities regarding DoSER projects and the AAAS mission.
  • Liaise with senior AAAS staff.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a scientific field accompanied by subsequent professional achievement and experience as evidenced by publications, academic appointments, and/or recognition.
  • Expressed interest in, sensitivity to, and experience in engaging diverse public on science, especially with regard to faith and religious communities.
  • Awareness of a breadth of science topics and issues that have broad implications for society and are of interest to diverse public.
  • 7+ years’ experience in science public engagement, organizing public events, and project management.
  • 7+ years’ experience in finance and budgeting of large-scale grants, and grant proposal development.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary context with a diversity of collaborators.
  • Demonstrated ability as an effective and successful team member and leader.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
