The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

Your responsibilities include:
- You will research and implement methods for a digital quality infrastructure in the field of materials science and analytical research
- Develop and implement machine learning models for digitizing and automating document management processes using Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Develop ontology learning methods using Large Language Models (LLMs) to learn and structure knowledge from unstructured data
- You will develop, maintain, and optimize proof-of-concept infrastructures using DevOps practices (e.g., Docker, CI/CD pipelines)
- Collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to integrate these contributions into existing and new quality infrastructures
- Develop and evaluate prototypes that offer innovative solutions to the challenges of digital transformation
Your qualifications:
- Completed academic degree (diploma, master’s) in a relevant field (business informatics, computer science, technical software development, mathematics, physics, data engineering) or a comparable discipline
- Practical experience in machine learning, particularly in processing and analyzing large datasets
- Excellent knowledge of programming languages such as Python and experience with ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), along with extensive experience in various types of neural networks, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs)
- Experience with DevOps practices (e.g., Docker, CI/CD) and maintaining proof-of-concept infrastructures is desirable
- Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and reinforcement learning (RL) for optimizing domain-specific applications is desirable
- Knowledge in the creation and use of knowledge graphs as well as experience in ontology learning is desirable
- Good knowledge of databases and common data analysis tools
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English
- Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
