Summary
The Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas is seeking a Research Assistant I that will supporting research initiatives at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The candidate will be responsible for planning, completing and occasionally supervising limited research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the investigator.
The candidate will engage in clinical and translational research involving hormonal, nutritional, and behavioral and lifestyle interventions to retard or reverse the metabolic and physical complications of aging, including sarcopenic obesity and type 2 diabetes and the interactions with markers of inflammation . The candidate will collect and evaluate data, oversee data and sample collection procedures, assist with data analyses/presentation, and write up of manuscripts, assist in supervising staff and students, work with collaborators to develop and conduct related projects, assist in development of grant proposals, and present work at seminars. The candidate will conduct the study in accordance with the timelines as stipulated in the research grant, document and interpret results of experiments and report to principal investigator.

Job Duties
- Conducts research experiments such as ELISAs and multiplexing for aging/inflammatory markers, and hormones
- Conducts DNA/RNA isolation, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and western blotting experiments
- Assist in genotyping and gene expression studies.
- Performs and analyze bone mineral density and MRI.
- Performs and analyze bone microarchitecture and bone strength
- Assist in sample processing and storage of samples, ordering supplies, and shipment of samples to specialized labs
- Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
- May develop and modify computer programs.
- Oversees the maintenance of lab equipment and environment.
- May assign activities to less experienced research staff.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned by the PI.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
- Two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
- Requires precision in preparing materials and recording data. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
