Staff Scientist Job description: The Kappel Lab at UCLA is seeking to hire a Staff Scientist to apply and develop experimental approaches to study sequence-structure-function relationships of RNA binding proteins, and to assist with lab management. We have positions available for experienced scientists with a PhD, as well as positions for early-career scientists and those without a PhD. The Kappel Lab investigates how RNA and protein sequences encode molecular and cellular functions, with a focus on how RNA-binding proteins regulate RNA metabolism and how this goes awry in disease. The Staff Scientist will contribute to this goal by applying and developing high-throughput experimental methods — especially utilizing imaging (optical pooled screens) and sequencing technologies — to map molecular structures, higher-order assembly (condensate) formation, subcellular localization and function for large libraries of protein and RNA sequences. Job responsibilities include designing and executing experiments, managing and ordering supplies, maintaining lab equipment, and training graduate students, postdocs, and undergrads. The Staff Scientist will be expected to have strong organizational skills, maintain high-quality documentation (lab notebook, protocols, inventory, etc.), communicate clearly, keep track of multiple projects simultaneously, and be comfortable troubleshooting in the lab.

Highly desired technical skills for these roles include experience with molecular biology techniques, mammalian cell culture, fluorescent microscopy, and next-generation sequencing. Experience with FACS and in vitro protein and RNA biochemistry is also desirable, but not required. Candidates who do not have experience in these specific areas, but have related wet-lab experience, and are creative and eager to learn are also highly encouraged to apply. We value scientific and cultural diversity and strive to create an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment for all lab members.

Requirements: At least 2 years of previous research experience. A PhD is not required.

Job start date: July 1, 2025 (or later).
