The Indiana University Indianapolis School of Science and the newly established IU Institute for Human Health and Wellbeing (H2W) invite applications for tenure-track/tenured faculty positions focused on advancing knowledge and solutions in areas critical to human health and wellbeing. This interdisciplinary Institute fosters collaboration across a wide range of fields to address pressing challenges related to mental health, substance use, social determinants of health, climate change impacts, and the lived environment. We are seeking dynamic researchers with a commitment to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service that aligns with the H2W Institute’s mission.
 

Position Highlights:
Position Type: Open rank Tenure-track, with the tenure home in one of six departments within the School of Science: Biology, Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, or Psychology.
 

Research Areas of Interest:
 

a) Mental Health and/or Substance Use Disorders: Investigating the underlying biochemical mechanisms, causes, correlates, treatments, and social impacts of mental health and/or substance use disorders that can include but are not limited to neurobiological/neurochemical mechanisms of mental health disorders; psychosocial and behavioral determinants of mental health; detection, prevention, treatment and intervention strategies; digital health and technology-assisted solutions; and health disparities.
 

b) Health Impacts of Climate Change: Researching how climate change affects physical, mental, and social health and developing adaptive strategies to mitigate its impacts, with research areas that could include but are not limited to air quality and respiratory health; heat-related illnesses; mechanisms of vector-borne diseases and disease ecology; water quality measurement and waterborne illnesses; mental health impacts of climate change; nutritional and food security; impact of extreme weather events on health and wellbeing; and health disparities exacerbated by climate change.
 

c) Statistics and Data Science: Research areas to address complex health issues with data science, bioinformatics, and health informatics that could include but are not limited to ‘omics and precision medicine; clinical informatics; artificial intelligence and machine learning in health to enhance diagnostics and predictions of disease progression; population health and epidemiology; and health informatics for mental health and/or substance use disorders.
 

Successful candidates are expected to:

Develop a robust, externally funded research program aligned with the mission of the H2W Institute. Collaborate across disciplines within the Institute to drive innovative research that addresses critical health challenges. Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the candidate’s home department. Mentor and advise trainees, contributing to a diverse and inclusive academic community. Engage in service activities within the department, H2W Institute, university, and broader community.

 

The successful candidates will have the following preferred qualifications:

Ph.D. in life, health, social, physical, or mathematical sciences, or related field. Research Experience: Strong record of scholarship in one or more of the identified research areas, with a demonstrated ability to secure or potential for securing external funding. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Commitment to working in a multidisciplinary environment with researchers from a range of scientific backgrounds. Teaching and Mentoring: Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring, with a commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for students and colleagues.

The IU Indianapolis School of Science, is comprised of 6 departments and 2 interdisciplinary programs and is the largest non-medical school on the IU Indianapolis campus.

Consistent with our health and life science focus, faculty in SoS have strong connections with the IU School of Medicine and the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, both of which are located on the same campus. Our faculty maintain strong, externally funded, research programs that span basic and applied research.
