Research Assistant Professor in Photonic Devices and Quantum Technology (several posts) (Ref. 241211016)
Since its inception in 1974, the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering which is now merged with the Department of Electrical Engineering to form the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) has enjoyed a distinguished history of providing outstanding engineering education and applied research in Hong Kong.
We are seeking applications from highly qualified candidates in the fields of Photonic Devices and Quantum Technology. In the area of Photonic Devices, we are seeking candidates with substantial research experience in emerging technologies such as silicon, silicon nitride, and lithium niobate photonic devices, including device design, simulation, fabrication, and packaging. In the area of Quantum Technology, we are seeking individuals with extensive research experience in quantum experiments, quantum theory, or related fields. Candidates should have expertise in quantum computing, communication, and metrology.
Candidates should be able to clearly articulate a vision for advancing departmental research in microphotonics/microelectronics and quantum technology. Candidates will be responsible for both research and teaching. They are expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, specifically in microphotonics/microelectronics and quantum technology. Candidates should be ready to teach not only their primary research areas but also multidisciplinary subjects.
Leading scholars regularly visit the Unit for research collaboration and to enhance the Unit’s research profile. Duties
The appointees will be required to:
(a) undertake teaching duties at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the area of photonic devices and quantum physics, including but not limited to:
(i) Photonic devices and fabrication;
(ii) Semiconductor physics;
(iii) VLSI technology;
(iv) Quantum information; or
(v) Quantum computing and communication;
(b) conduct research that leads to publications in top-tier refereed journals;
(c) attract research funding and support industrial researches;
(d) supervise student projects and theses;
(e) engage in scholarly research/consultancy in their area of expertise;
(f) contribute to departmental services and activities; and
(g) undertake any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates.
Qualifications
Applicants should:
(a) have a doctoral degree in Microelectronics, Microphotonics, Quantum Physics or a relevant discipline with focus on photonic device or quantum technology;
(b) have the relevant postdoctoral research experience and a publication record that is commensurate with the level of appointment;
(c) have a strong background in the design and fabrication of photonic devices (e.g. Si, SiN, Thin Film LiNbO3, etc.), along with extensive experience in quantum computing, communication, and metrology;
(d) demonstrate excellence in original research and strong fundamental knowledge in one or more of the above-mentioned core research areas;
(e) demonstrate potential to establish significant externally funded research programmes;
(f) be able to demonstrate evidence of effective classroom teaching skills; and
(g) have excellent communication skills and the ability to use English as the medium of instruction.
Conditions of Service
