Deputy Director, Office of AIDS Research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, the world’s largest medical research facility, is seeking applications from exceptional candidates for the challenging position of Deputy Director, Office of AIDS Research (OAR). The Deputy Director of OAR provides scientific leadership in areas including policy development and program management for the diverse, highly complex NIH HIV research program; they also provide scientific advice to the NIH Associate Director for AIDS Research on the entire NIH HIV research portfolio across the broad range of scientific disciplines.

 

OAR has an annual operating budget of approximately $67 million and a staff of 48 federal employees. The Deputy Director of OAR provides overall day-to-day management of OAR operations and programs and guides a diverse group of government and contract professionals in the office’s efforts to coordinate the NIH HIV research program. The Deputy Director develops and analyzes policies and program initiatives to enhance HIV research objectives that have national and global impact; provides effective leadership in the implementation of management policies and guidelines; participates with the OAR Director in establishing goals, objectives, plans, and priorities for OAR, and communicate goals and priorities to staff.

 

OAR is looking for applicants with a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess an M.D. or Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in the biomedical or behavioral sciences, with broad senior-level scientific research experience and experience in direct administration of a research program in one or more scientific areas related to HIV research. Applicants should be respected, both nationally and internationally, within their profession as individuals of scientific prominence, with a distinguished record of research accomplishments and expertise in policy development regarding HIV research.

 

The successful candidate for this Title 42 position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications. Full Federal benefits will be provided including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401k equivalent). Relocation expenses may be paid.
