Summary

The Department of Pediatrics Division of Tropical Medicine seeks a highly motivated Research Technician II to work in the Laboratory for Translational Virology. The purpose of the position is to conduct responsible research work in virology, immunology, and epidemiology. The project will primarily focus on developing vaccines and treatments for viral pathogens and includes performing sequencing, ELISAs, PCR, and other assays for the project in BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments The individual filling this position is expected to keep up to date with the scientific literature, assist others with preparing protocols, and assist others with reports of data. They may contribute to writing manuscripts. We expect that the Research Technician II will practically and intellectually contribute to other complex research projects within the Division of Tropical Medicine as needs arise and contribute to a high-paced environment with an established team.

Job Duties

  • Performs specialized research experiments in BSL2 and BSL3 environments. Techniques for these projects include but are not limited to: sequencing, cell culture maintenance, DNA preparation, PCR, flow cytometry, and ELISA. These also include performing laboratory work in virology, including infectious work with in vitro and in vivo models, and viral titration assays.
  • Works independently and in conjunction with others who are part of the Laboratory for Translational Virology and/or Pathogen Resource Core. Selects and performs appropriate research procedures and communicates assistance needed in a timely manner.
  • Ensures quality control of their conducted laboratory procedures, including test validations.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data.
  • Performs additional routine laboratory procedures to assist in the lab's research as assigned.
  • Develops research techniques and performs applications required for specific research projects.
  • Maintains an accurate, up-to-date, organized, and legible lab notebook that records all data according to methods requested.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.
