The Office of the Vice President for Research at New Mexico State University (NMSU) seeks an innovative leader to serve as NMSU’s Director of Research Computing and Data Science. This position will be instrumental in advancing NMSU's mission through research, education, and capacity building in multiple areas, especially high-performance computing (HPC), cloud computing, and data science. The target 9-month salary is $170,000 and includes a commitment from the NM INBRE program to fund the summer salary for the first two years (i.e. $227k/year).

A key aspect of this position is securing extramural research funding to sustain and grow research infrastructure and capabilities. The successful candidate will have experience writing grant proposals and building partnerships to support initiatives in HPC, data science, and/or AI/ML technologies. Ideal candidates bring extensive experience with HPC systems, HPC and AI/ML applications, and a strong background in cloud and research computing infrastructure, and practical leadership skills.

The Director will oversee HPC and institutional cloud computing resources, and lead AI initiatives to support the university's emerging research needs. This role involves coordinating data science projects, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and promoting computational resource usage across campus units. Additionally, the director will oversee the Data Science Core of the NIH-funded NM-INBRE program as an ongoing commitment of the position. The ability to manage large-scale data integration and analytics projects, including knowledge of cloud computing and popular current cloud computing platforms is preferred.

Strategic Leadership:

Collaborate with academic schools, departments, research centers, and external partners to identify emerging computational needs and opportunities. Foster interdisciplinary collaboration by promoting the use of computational resources across various domains. Infrastructure Capacity Building:

Secure resources and funding to expand NMSU’s research computing capability. Oversee NMSU Research Computing's computational infrastructure, including HPC, cloud computing resources, research data storage systems, and networking hardware. Coordination of Biomedical Data Science Initiatives:

Coordinate biomedical data science initiatives with support from the NM INBRE program. Collaborate with faculty and researchers across NMSU to drive innovative biomedical research. Develop partnerships and secure funding to support and expand biomedical data science projects. Leadership in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning:

Facilitate the integration of AI technologies into research projects to enhance their scope and impact. Lead initiatives to secure funding for AI-related research and infrastructure. Foster collaborations with industry partners and other academic institutions to advance AI research. User Support and Training:

Develop training programs to enhance researchers' computational skills. Provide exceptional user support, addressing technical inquiries and troubleshooting issues. Promote best practices in research computing. Research Partnerships:

Collaborate with faculty and researchers to advance computational research projects. Facilitate access to specialized software tools and datasets. Explore external funding opportunities and partnerships.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Extensive demonstrated experience with HPC systems, operation, funding models, and applications.Thoroughly understand data processing, alignment, and interpretation across multiple application areas including bioinformatics. Comprehensive knowledge of cloud computing and research computing infrastructure. Strong understanding of data management, analysis, and visualization techniques. Expertise in programming and data analysis tools like R, Python, SQL, and machine learning. Strong communication and leadership skills for effective collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams

Required Education:  Doctorate in a related field.

Required Experience:  Five years of professional experience directly related to the standard duties as outlined. Proven track record of innovation and success in developing and implementing research computing and data science resources. Research background and qualifications suitable for leading a large extramurally funded program. Experience in collaborative research, including interdisciplinary and translational science. Strong record of securing funding and fostering research productivity.

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience in providing bioinformatics support in areas such as proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics. Experience in statistical support and data science, including software package/library development, data visualization, database management, and HPC/cluster computing. Financial budgeting and resource management skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective partnerships.
