Position Overview

Two separate postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Richard Milner at San Diego Biomedical Research Institute (doing business as San Diego BioMed) in San Diego, California to work on two recently funded NIH projects. The overall focus of the lab is to study mechanisms of cerebrovascular remodeling and blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in two models of neurological disease, with a focus on extracellular matrix (ECM)-integrin-mediated signaling.

The goal of the first project is to evaluate the therapeutic potential of hypoxia mimetics in the EAE model of multiple sclerosis (MS).  Building on our findings that mild hypoxia and hypoxia mimetics both attenuate disease progression, the goal of this project is to define the underlying mechanisms responsible (see Halder et al, Proc Natl Acad Sci, 117, 11126 (2020) and Brain, 144, 402 (2021)) with a view to exploring the translational potential of this approach for the treatment of MS.

The goal of the second project is to study the impact of age on hypoxia-induced cerebrovascular remodeling and transient BBB disruption. Having shown that these events show strong brain region- and age-dependent differences, the aim is to use a transcriptomics strategy to identify differences in gene expression that may underlie these differences (see Halder et al, Proc Natl Acad Sci, 116, 26029 (2019), Acta Neuropath Comms, 8: 175 (2020) and Aging Cell, 21: e13720 (2022). The aim here is to identify mechanisms that could be targeted to improve BBB integrity in the aged population.

Minimum Requirements:

Both positions require a Ph.D. The ideal candidates should be highly motivated and have a strong background working with in vivo models for the first project, preferably with EAE) and with standard genotyping, immuno-histochemical/fluorescent microscopy and western blotting techniques. Experience with animal cognitive/behavioral studies would be a plus. For the second project, hands-on experience with transcriptomics (particularly spatial) and bioinformatics programs to decipher the outcomes, would be a major benefit. Applicants are expected to have excellent communication and writing skills and be capable of working independently or as part of a team. These positions will remain open until filled.

Salary Range:

$68,700 - $72,000

Benefits:

San Diego BioMed offers a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, paid time off, and a generous employer match to the retirement plan. The work environment at San Diego BioMed is one that fosters and promotes collaboration and inclusivity.
