Department of Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics (MMT)
MMT, led by Matthew D. Ringel, MD, is a new basic science department in the College of Medicine. The vision of the department is to link fundamental science to translational research through collaboration and synergies within the OSU environment, accelerating translation of fundamental science to improve health.
The department emphasizes three thematic scientific areas: 1) Foundational therapeutics from drug design through development and validation; 2) tissue engineering and stem cell biology; and 3) molecular medicine and systems biology. The department draws on interdepartmental and college collaborations, partnering closely with the OSU College of Medicine, OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center and the James Cancer Hospital (OSUCCC-James) and the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute (DHLRI) to emphasize research in translational science.
Current MMT faculty have partnerships with both the OSUCCC-James and DHLRI, mechanisms of cancer progression and predisposition, cancer metabolism and immunotherapy, cardiac and basic fribroblast biology, calcium signaling, and systems biology. Faculty are funded by National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and the American Heart Association, highlighting the diverse, yet impactful nature of MMT research. MMT faculty also participate and are members in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BSGP), the Ohio State Biochemistry Program (OSBP), and others enabling teaching opportunities in courses and in the laboratory.
Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology
The PIIO is a comprehensive bench-to-bedside research initiative focused on harnessing the body’s immune system to fight cancer at all levels. Established by a pledge of more than $100 million from Pelotonia, the PIIO represents Ohio State's commitment to grow the exciting area of immuno-oncology. Led by founding director Zihai Li, MD, PhD, the PIIO builds upon a rich portfolio of active investigator-initiated IO clinical trials being conducted at the OSUCCC-James. Its external advisory board is comprised of multiple world leaders in the field of IO including Drs. Lieping Chen, Carl June, Sue Kaech, Miriam Merad, Drew Pardoll, and Jennifer Wargo.
Research in the PIIO includes innate immunity (dendritic cells, macrophages, NK cells, cytokines, etc), adaptive immunity (B cells, CD4, CD8 T cells, etc.), systems immunology, translational IO, data science, etc. The PIIO is supported by our Immune Monitoring and Discovery Platform (IMDP), which provides comprehensive cell-based and molecule-based immunoassay services to support basic, translational, and clinical IO studies. The PIIO’s Immuno-Oncology Informatics Group (IOIG) provides data analytics for flow cytometry, bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq, spatial transcriptomics and imaging, neoantigen discovery, and more.
Candidates will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory spaces; cutting-edge core research facilities (Spectrum Flow Cytometry, Multiplex Histology, Single Cell Technology, GMP Facility for Cell Therapy, Antibody Engineering Facility, IO Informatics and more).
