The newly established Mechano-X Institute (THUM) at Tsinghua University, under the leadership of Professor Huajian Gao, a renowned scientist in the international community, is inviting applications for multiple faculty positions. We seek outstanding scientists with a strong potential for pioneering interdisciplinary research, particularly in areas that integrate mechanics with advanced technological developments across various engineering and science disciplines.

THUM is positioned at the forefront of research in mechanomaterials, a novel research paradigm at the intersection of mechanics, materials science, and biology, which centers on mechanics while focusing on materials. The Institute's vision is to leverage fundamental mechanics principles—particularly the relationships between force, geometry, and material properties—combined with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques. Our ultimate goal is to proactively design innovative materials and regulate biological systems, achieving targeted functionality for a wide array of applications.

Positions Available

We are currently offering positions at all levels, from Assistant Professors to Senior Professors, in the following broad areas:

Mechanomaterials: Exploring the design and discovery of new materials through mechanics-driven principles.

  • Scientific machine learning and advanced AI tools for engineering applications;
  • Advanced materials manufacturing and fabrication technologies;
  • Mechanics-guided design of materials with unprecedented forms, functions and properties;
  • Mechanics-guided design of materials for health care, medicine, electronics, optics, robotics, energy, sustainability, etc;
  • Mechanics-guided regulation of tissues/organs for disease prevention, mitigation, and healing.

Biomechanics and Mechanobiology: Investigating the mechanical aspects of biological systems and their regulation.

Computational Mechanics: Advanced simulations and modeling techniques, including AI-enhanced methods.

Nanomechanics: Studying mechanics at the nanoscale and its applications in nanotechnology.

Mechanics of Soft and Intelligent Materials: Focusing on emerging materials with adaptable and responsive properties.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD in mechanics, materials science, engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, or a related discipline. They should demonstrate a strong track record of research excellence, with the ability to lead innovative projects and collaborate across fields. We particularly welcome applicants whose work bridges traditional mechanics with other cutting-edge areas such as AI, data science, biotechnology, and sustainable technologies.

Application Process
Interested candidates should submit the following materials:

  1. A detailed curriculum vitae
  2. A statement of research interests and future plans (max 3 pages)
  3. Three letters of recommendation

Please send your applications to mechxjob@tsinghua.edu.cn with the subject line "THUM Faculty Application."

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.
