The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine is seeking a motivated Faculty, Assistant Professor to perform cutting edge basic-translational research aimed toward improved patient therapies. We are the core for the treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and other diseases of the chest at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and have a history of highly successful MD-PhD working relationships. We do cutting edge research in toxic respiratory exposures, cancer susceptibility, immune-based cancer therapeutics, patient outcomes, and have close ties to the Departments of Cancer Biology, Pulmonology, and Medical Oncology. It is a collaborative environment with ready access to patient tissue, clinical data, basic science facilities, shared instrumentation, animal facilities, and medical students/post-doctoral researchers.

Candidates should have an interest in intra- and trans-disciplinary science that ultimately impacts the treatment of patients. Recent projects have utilized human tissue samples, mouse models, molecular biology, immunology, metabolism, multi-omics data integration, biologic imaging, and machine learning. The ideal candidate will have strong core basic science skills and want to work closely with clinicians to foster a robust research program, write papers, submit grants, and possibly participate in clinical trials. In addition to the departmental faculty, we encourage collaboration across the institution, including other clinical/basic science departments, the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine - WFIRM, the Center for Precision Medicine, and other research entities.
