The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Physiology.
Founded in 1765, the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States and prides itself on leadership in biomedical research, medical education, and patient care. As the first basic science department in the United States, the Department of Physiology has a proud and rich combination of academic activities and service contributions. Today, Penn Physiology is consistently among the nation's top recipients of funding for biomedical research from the National Institutes of Health. The department's leadership has systematically built research and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of the Perelman School of Medicine, the University and the community. Its distinguished faculty produce and disseminate scholarship, with a departmental core educational mission in the development of the next generation of research scientists. It provides scientific, laboratory, and career development training for undergraduates, graduate students, and post-doctoral scientists.
The Department of Physiology is closely aligned with the Pennsylvania Muscle Institute, in addition to key partnerships with the Departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics, the Center for Epilepsy and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, the Cardiovascular Institute, the Institute of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, and the Institute of Structural Biology.
The Chair of the Department directs 15 full-time faculty members, 30 trainees, and 45 professional and support staff. The Department has a deep commitment to education with graduate students largely drawn from the Cell and Molecular Biology; Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemical Biology; Neuroscience; and Bioengineering Graduate Groups.
The Chair will provide strong vision and leadership for the Department and will lead strategic planning and implementation for its continued success. Applicants for the position of Chair must hold an MD and/or PhD degree and qualify for a faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor rank in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates should have a track record of distinguished national/international record of research, possess dynamic, inclusive leadership, and have significant administrative experience. Candidates must have a clear commitment to - and excellence in - education, fostering an inclusive environment, and sponsorship and mentorship of a diverse cadre of students, trainees, fellows and faculty. Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, the Perelman School of Medicine, the campus community and beyond. The candidate must articulate a compelling vision for the future of Physiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, the role of the department within a highly regarded academic medical center and the field of physiology in general.
All interested applicants are invited to apply online via this posting by uploading their curriculum vitae, letter of interest and research statement to the attention of Kristen W. Lynch, PhD. First consideration will be given to applications received by November 18, 2024.
