The Ruhr area, one of Europe‘s largest metropolitan regions, offers attractive career opportunities for excellent scientists and scholars from around the world. In 2021, Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen established the Research Alliance Ruhr to bundle their cutting-edge international research on the most urgent challenges facing humankind. There are four research centers and a college. This is just the latest chapter in our long-standing collaboration as the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), a community of 14,000 researchers and 110,000 students in the heart of Germany.
As part of the Research Alliance Ruhr, the Research Center One Health Ruhr – from Molecules to Systems is seeking to fill the following position at the Faculty of Biology in conjunction with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) as soon as possible:
Professorship in Cell Biology and Human Disease
(W3 salary band as defined in the North Rhine-Westphalian regulations for the W salary range (Landesbesoldungsordnung W))
The Faculty of Biology and the Faculty of Medicine at UDE enjoy an excellent international reputation in the fields of basic, translational, and clinical research. Core themes have been consolidated in numerous research collaborations due to the interdisciplinary nature of basic research and clinically oriented science at the Faculty of Biology in association with the Essen Medical Campus and the University Alliance Ruhr.
Your Responsibilities
The person selected to hold the new professorship position will chair the newly formed Department of Cell Biology and Human Disease. The professorship is affiliated with UDE’s Faculty of Biology, jointly with the Medical Faculty. Further associations exist with faculties at RUB and TU Dortmund, as well as with ISAS in Dortmund.
The successful candidate will have an established and internationally competitive research portfolio and work on a current topic of molecular cell biology that bears relevance to human disease, including cancer. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, cytoskeletal dynamics, chromatin-related regulation, and mechanisms of proteostasis. The teaching load is reduced to four hours per week per semester, and members of the associated group may be involved in the classes.
Applicants should complement and strengthen the Research Center One Health Ruhr and expand the existing strengths of the ZMB and the Faculty of Biology. Participation in the Collaborative Research Center 1430 ”Molecular Mechanisms of Cell State Transitions“ is desirable.
Your Qualifications
The future chair should be an internationally recognized scientist in a field of molecular cell biology that is related to the research interests of the Research Center One Health Ruhr and have an established, externally funded and competitive research program. Expertise in leading research groups as well as publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals and successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding projects are mandatory. Experience in initiating and leading research consortia is desirable. In addition, the recruitment criteria of Sections 36 and 37 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, HG NRW) apply.
Attractive Environment
The Research Center One Health Ruhr investigates the fundamental mechanisms of health and disease from the molecular level to large-scale environmental science. Fourteen new chairs will be established over the next two years.
The Research Center is affiliated with the three member universities of the University Alliance Ruhr. We offer an excellent scientific environment and attractive opportunities for collaboration with renowned international, national, and regional partners. The professorship will be closely associated with the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Faculties of Biology and Medicine as well as the Center of Medical Biotechnology (ZMB). These institutions have an excellent international reputation in the fields of biomedical research. Research has been consolidated in numerous interdisciplinary collaborations among the 80 groups of the ZMB. All participating faculties and institutions have a strong track record in acquiring major third-party funding for collaborative research.
Research Alliance Ruhr
The Research Alliance Ruhr is a joint venture of the three major universities in the Ruhr area and was initiated by the Ruhr Conference. The four research centers focus on One Health, Chemical Sciences and Sustainability, Trustworthy Data Science and Security, and Future Energy Materials and Systems. In addition, the Research Alliance Ruhr has established a College for Social Sciences and Humanities.
Over the next few years, the Research Alliance Ruhr will appoint up to 50 research-focused professorships and offer numerous positions for research assistants. Join us now and create innovations for the world of tomorrow in Europe’s densest university landscape, where you will find a wide range of scientific and industrial partners right on your doorstep.
