The Mount Sinai Health System has a new Faculty Position opportunity in investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of pain.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the neural basis of pain and a strong track record of scientific achievement. They will be a highly motivated and independent researcher with a passion for discovery and a commitment to excellence. The candidate will have a proven ability to secure external funding and build a successful research program. Importantly, they will possess a strong translational focus and a desire to bridge the gap between basic science and clinical practice.

Job description

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, in conjunction with the Nash Family Department of Neuroscience, Mark Lebwohl Center for Neuroinflammation and Sensation, and Friedman Brain Institute seeks a highly motivated and innovative Research Scientist to join our Department in investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms of pain. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research to elucidate the molecular and cellular underpinnings of pain, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies and clinical trials that improve the lives of patients living with chronic pain. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a dynamic research environment focused on translating basic science discoveries into clinical applications.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research focused on molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying chronic pain, with a particular emphasis on new approaches and cutting-edge electrophysiology, imaging, and/or single-cell technologies and transcriptomics
  • Develop and execute innovative experimental designs to investigate the role of mechanisms underlying pain sensitization and chronic pain states
  • Utilize advanced techniques in basic neuroscience, as well as imaging, molecular biology, and behavioral analysis.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to advance our understanding of pain mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets.
  • Secure external funding to support research initiatives and build a robust research program.
  • Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact scientific journals.
  • Contribute to the development and translation of research findings into clinical applications.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, or a related field.
  • Strong track record of independent research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and grant funding.
  • Demonstrated expertise in neural synaptic mechanisms and pain research.
  • Experience with advanced experimental techniques, including electrophysiology, imaging, opto-/chemo-genetics, and/or spatial transcriptomics
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • A strategic vision for building a successful research program with a strong focus on translational research.
  • A passion for understanding the complexities of chronic pain and a commitment to improving the lives of patients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral experience in pain research, PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent.
  • Experience in developing and leading research teams.
  • A strong record of external funding, including NIH and similar grants.
  • A clear understanding of the drug discovery and development process.
  • Experience in collaborating with clinicians to translate research findings into clinical practice.
