The Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, located in Ames, Iowa, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will join a department with active research programs in pharmacology, animal behavior, neurobiology, infectious disease and cell/molecular biology (https://vetmed.iastate.edu/bms/research), and instruction of undergraduate, professional, and graduate students in the biomedical sciences (https://vetmed.iastate.edu/bms/academics/concurrent-DVM/BMS-courses).  

This is a full-time, 9-month position with salary commensurate with qualifications. Position responsibilities are flexible but the successful candidate will be required to teach anatomy to professional, graduate, and undergraduate students. The amount of anatomy instruction will be tailored to the successful candidate’s career goals.  A successful candidate with a background and focus on instruction will have primarily teaching responsibilities and be expected to produce scholarship in the area of teaching and learning (https://celt.iastate.edu/prepare-and-teach/improve-your-teaching/scholarship-of-teaching-and-learning-sotl/).  A successful candidate with a background and focus in research will have reduced teaching responsibilities and will be expected to establish a dynamic, extramurally funded research program pertinent to human and/or animal health. Required Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM (or equivalent) with documented interest in teaching anatomy and/or PhD with research experience relevant to Biomedical Sciences

  • Teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals (research and/or scholarship of teaching and learning)

  • History of applications and/or demonstrated success obtaining funding to support areas of scholarship

  • Anatomy teaching engagement at college and/or professional program

  • Research plans relevant to biomedical sciences and/or curricular development

  • Evidence of student mentoring experience

Department & College Description

The BMS department supports the College of Veterinary Medicine’s mission through teaching fundamental biomedical science curriculum to undergraduate, veterinary medical, and graduate students, with the latter also including the BMS One Year Master’s program and several multidisciplinary interdepartmental programs at Iowa State University. BMS conducts state of the art scientific discovery and translational research relevant to the health of animals and humans. Departmental faculty have active research programs in a range of One Health disciplines including clinical and translational pharmacology, animal behavior, neurobiology, microbial and helminth infectious disease, immunology and cell and molecular biology.
