The Department of Applied Physics at Stanford University seeks applicants for a faculty position at Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in experimental biological physics very broadly construed.  We seek candidates who bring physics-inspired approaches (e.g. developing instrumentation and other methods, or framing questions) to any area of biology including information processing by structures ranging from cells to brains; dynamics and mechanics ranging from molecules to cells, tissues, and development; evolution, ecology, and engineering of microbes or the immune system. Applicants are expected to develop a world-leading independent research program which will particularly attract graduate students with physics backgrounds, and should possess good communication skills and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, biophysics, bioengineering, or a related field at the time of appointment and will be expected to teach and advise students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2025.

Candidates should apply through Stanford Faculty Positions and submit:

  • a cover letter curriculum vitae (including a complete publication list) a research statement (no more than three single-spaced pages) a statement (one page) on teaching and, optionally, other potential contributions to the university beyond research and teaching a brief (less than 300 words) summary for non-specialists of expected research program up to three representative publications or preprints
  • contact information for three letters of recommendation: for initial or non-tenured applicants references will automatically be contacted for candidates who currently hold tenure, letters will be requested only for a short list of finalists with permission of the applicants

Review of applications will begin on November 8, 2024.  Late applications may be reviewed at the discretion of the search committee.
