Position Focus:
The Analytical Services Group (Core Facilities) of Yale University West Campus is seeking to hire a Staff Scientist for its newly expanded Cleanroom. Under the supervision of the Director of the Materials Characterization Core, the Staff Scientist is responsible for closely monitoring the health of the Cleanroom support systems and its research equipment. The Scientist oversees the installation and commissioning of research equipment. The Scientist coordinates manufacturer service technicians, Yale Facilities personnel, and other resources to ensure high facility and equipment uptime. The Scientist troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs defective equipment. The Scientist coordinates the safety training of the researchers working in the facility and provides training on the facility's research equipment.

The Cleanroom accommodates the research activities of faculty from the West Campus Institutes: Nanobiology, Chemical Biology, Cancer Biology, Energy Sciences, Systems Biology, and Microbial Sciences. The Scientist is expected to assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research, assist in the development of research plans, and participate in preparation of grant proposals.

Essential Duties:
1. Participates in the planning, conceiving, designing and implementation of highly specialized state of the art instrumentation equipment and apparatus for a multi-faceted research project 2. Solves engineering and design problems to ensure that equipment meets the objective of the study 3. Develops reports and proposals for research project outlining machinery available, direction of the design, and development of new instrumentation. 4. Determines available resources such as electrical and mechanical components and equipment. 5. Develops cost and time estimates for specific equipment design. Ensures time and cost estimates are met. 6. Supervises and monitors work of professionals and solicits consulting work from outside labs 7. Manages quality control of work performed on research projects. 8. Teaches research support theories and design. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Experience in operating Reactive Ion Etching and E-beam lithography systems as well as other etching, deposition and metrology processes used in the micro/nano-device fabrication.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated knowledge of processes including positive and negative resists, silanization, casting materials (i.e. PDMS) to create single and multi- level devices. Ability to teach and train users in these processes.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent interpersonal skills suited to a multiuser environment. Demonstrated ability to organize and support multiple projects for multiple users.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to function independently and utilize judgment, analysis and creativity in investigating problems while evaluating alternative solutions. Self- motivated.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work as a full collaborator with faculty, students, and research staff. Ability to train and instruct students and post- docs and to participate in acquiring funding.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience and understanding of microelectronics and microfluidic processing equipment. Familiar with all processes related to soft lithography used in the fabrication of micro and nano- fluidic devices.
