(1) MARINE SCIENTIST (NATURAL SCIENCE)
Research emphasis could include marine ecology, evolution, physiology, molecular biology, conservation biology, coastal processes, nearshore oceanography, global change biology or biogeochemistry, with a preference for researchers with interest in tropical, nearshore, field-based research. Candidates whose research spans multiple disciplines are welcomed. The successful candidate will have outstanding opportunities to develop an independent research program, form global collaborations, mentor post-doctoral fellows and graduate students from an international community, collaborate with Smithsonian staff and the Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGeo; www.marinegeo.si.edu), and engage an international pool of post- and pre-doctoral fellows, undergraduates and interns with tropical marine biology.

The position is a full-time, permanent appointment, federal funded position, with 15% of time devoted to student engagement and instruction in STRI’s field-based courses.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in marine science or related field, and show evidence of outstanding research potential, including publication record and extramural funding. Proficiency in both English and Spanish is advantageous, but not required. Early-career candidates are encouraged to apply with a demonstrated external work experience sufficiente and equivalent in grade 12.

The position is based in Panama and will be hired at the grade 13 OPM 2024 Pay Table (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2024/general-schedule/). The selected candidate will receive allowances and differentials according to Department of State Standard Regulations (DSSR) and unique specific policies. Laboratory set-up and relocation expenses may be provided, as well as direct support for research on an annual basis based on budget availability.

(2) MARINE SCIENTIST (SOCIAL SCIENCE)
Research emphasis could include marine socio-ecology, marine social science, human geography, environmental anthropology, applied economics, or environmental sociology; as they relate to marine (ocean and coastal) geographies, with a preference for researchers with interest in tropical research. Research spanning disciplines (both natural and social) is welcomed. The successful candidate will have outstanding opportunities to develop an independent research program, form global collaborations, mentor post-doctoral fellows and graduate students from an international community, collaborate with Smithsonian staff, and engage an international pool of undergraduates and interns.

The position is a full-time (12-month), not to exceed 3-year, research appointment, trust funded position, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and performance. The position includes 15% of time devoted to student engagement and instruction within STRI’s field-based courses.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in relevant marine social science disciplines, and show evidence of outstanding research potential, including publication record and extramural funding.
