Postdoc/Senior Scientist/Research Faculty Position Available

Seeking a postdoctoral fellow, senior staff scientist, or research faculty to join a dynamic and growing lab focused on lung injury and regeneration.

Research Interests

Our lab is interested in understanding the mechanisms by which the lung epithelium responds to injury.  We study mechanisms of injury/inflammation and regeneration after injury. Epithelial injury and a failure of epithelial regeneration is thought to drive the development of lung diseases such as ARDS (including COVID-19), fibrosis, and emphysema. Specifically, we are exploring the mechanisms underlying proliferation and differentiation of alveolar epithelial progenitor or stem cells. We have identified β-catenin, HIF, and TGFβ signaling as important drivers. We also study the epithelial inflammatory and host defense responses to bacterial and viral infection, specifically epithelial-immune cell crosstalk. We use mouse and cell culture models to study mechanisms. The mouse work involves lineage tracing and inducible cell-specific gene deficient mice, and primary epithelial cell culture/organoid work allows us to further dissect mechanism. We use confocal imaging, immunostaining, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), single cell RNA sequencing, proteomics, and flow assisted cytometry sorting (FACS). We aim to address important questions and make novel discoveries that significantly enhance out understanding of lung biology and disease. We hope that our discoveries may ultimately lead to the development of therapies for infectious, inflammatory, and fibrotic lung diseases..

Description of Position

The scientist will be expected to take a leading role and work closely with the PI in the development and implementation of this research program. A PhD (completed or near completion) or MS or BS with significant experience in cell biology, developmental biology, immunology, physiology, or related field is required. Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work hard and be flexible in a fast-paced environment, and ability to get along with other lab members are important.  Prior experience with rodents, cell culture, microscopy, RNA/qPCR, western blotting, computational biology, and/or flow cytometry would be helpful. At least one first authored manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal is required for candidates with a PhD. Candidates interested in either leading their own projects or supporting projects of other team members are encouraged to apply.

Excellent opportunity for individuals interested in studying stem cells and tissue regeneration as well as immune-epithelial crosstalk. Projects range from basic mechanistic to translational.  Opportunities to learn cutting-edge techniques, including organoid culture and scRNAseq. Opportunities for career development, including manuscript and grant writing and oral presentation, mentorship, attending international conferences, interacting with renowned scientists who are collaborators.

How To Apply. Please send cover letter, CV, and references to zemansr@med.umich.edu.
