Job Description:
The Department of Biology at Syracuse University is seeking applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor to teach Biotechnology undergraduate and graduate level classes in our multidisciplinary biotechnology programs, starting in Spring 2025. In addition to a 3+3 teaching load, the successful applicant will provide input into curricular and co-curricular programing, contribute to student recruitment, student advising, and internship placements as needed. This position will initially have a renewable contract of three years. Assistant Teaching Professors are full members of the departmental and university community and are eligible to vote on department, college and university decisions excluding tenure-track faculty hiring and promotion and tenure decisions.
Located between the Adirondack Mountains, Finger Lakes, and Lake Ontario regions of upstate New York, the metropolitan area of Syracuse boasts myriad cultural and recreational opportunities and offers a wide array of inexpensive urban, small town, and rural living. Qualifications:
PhD in a Biological field.
Job Specific Qualifications:
PhD in a Biological field. Biotechnology industry experience would be an advantage. Teaching experience, ideally including teaching laboratory classes. Strong organization and communication skills are essential. As course instructor the individual will be expected to perform all components of the Job Description, and to work collaboratively with the other course instructors. Additionally, the instructor will comply with Syracuse University guidelines concerning syllabi and curriculum changes. The instructor will be responsive to Mid-Semester Progress Reporting and will report final grades for the course. This person will contribute to student recruitment, student advising, helping students find relevant internships.
Responsibilities:
Teaching and grading undergraduate and graduate classes. Managing and supporting TAs associated with the courses they are teaching. Providing input into curricular and co-curricular programing. Developing and/or updating course syllabi and new courses, as appropriate. Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours. Advising graduate and undergraduate students majoring in Biotechnology. Supporting recruitment of MS students, including assessing student applications. Helping students find relevant internships and evaluating those internship placements. Serving on departmental and university committees, as appropriate. Working with the academic unit to maintain and assess student learning outcomes.
