Science Research Training and Education Fellow – Bronx Science Stanley Manne ’52 Research Institute

Reporting to the President of the Bronx Science Foundation and working closely with the principal, the assistant principal of biology, the faculty of the Bronx High School of Science, and other key partners, the Fellow will play an integral role in mentoring students from a range of Bronx public schools participating in the research program. The program, which extends through the summer and the academic year, is hosted at The Stanley Manne Institute, a brand new, state-of-the-art research facility at the Bronx High School of Science. The Fellow’s role primary responsibilities include aiding students in the development of their research projects and providing comprehensive mentorship throughout the various phases of the scientific process.

The Bronx Science Foundation Organization Summary

The Bronx Science Foundation is organized for charitable and educational purposes, including, but not limited to, preserving the mission and excellence of The Bronx High School of Science. The Bronx Science Foundation exists to build and maintain relationships among its alumni and friends, to raise funds for both the School and Foundation activities, and to serve as an effective model of a successful public school-private Foundation partnership. The Foundation will work to provide financial resources and strategic guidance to ensure the highest quality education for students currently attending The Bronx High School of Science, while fostering lifelong social and professional relationships amongst the alumni. 

Our job is to increase opportunities for students through improved funding, access to resources and using connections to expand students’ horizons. We raise money for specific facilities, curricular enhancements and experiential education programs to enhance the student learning experience. We organize programs locally, regionally and internationally to connect with our alumni.

The Stanley Manne Institute Research Program Overview

The Manne Institute, established in 2022 by a generous gift from alumnus Stanley Manne, Class of 1952, provides a world-class science research facility featuring three multidisciplinary labs and a full complement of auxiliary spaces: a cold room, tissue culture room, microscopy room, sterilization room, animal room and more. The research program at the Manne Institute will enable students to conduct advanced independent scientific research throughout the summer and academic year using cutting-edge equipment and materials. Through key partnerships, the Manne Institute will establish the Bronx as a hub of student scientific research and provide students with unique opportunities not found elsewhere in New York City.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working in a team-based environment with faculty and other fellows to mentor students as they conduct advanced science research projects.

  • Research Mentorship – Mentor students in designing advanced research projects that maximize and expand upon the resources, equipment, and available model systems available at the Manne Institute. Contribute to the strategic vision of the Manne Institute by suggesting new model organisms, equipment, and supplies that will enable the success of students and fellows.
  • Research Education, Safety, & Compliance – Assist in the development and delivery of a curriculum that teaches students 1) ethical research conduct, 2) experimental design, 3) lab safety, and 4) common lab techniques. Ensure students adhere to all safety guidelines and ensure compliance. Participate in any training and certification required to conduct advanced research with secondary school students. Relationships & Fundraising– Build powerful relationships throughout the scientific community. Identify opportunities for students and find ways for the Manne Institute to partner with external researchers and institutions. Identify and manage grant proposals to secure additional funding for the Manne Institute. Develop partnerships and relationships to improve the likelihood of success. Collaboration – Work closely with the Bronx Science faculty to foster students' interest, experience, and research skills. Collaborate with other fellows to ensure student and overall strategic goals. Program Expansion – Build upon the success of the Bronx Science Research Program by introducing new programs and opportunities for students to engage in science research at both Bronx Science and the partner schools. Student Outcomes – Assist in student preparation for poster presentations at the end of the summer and end of each semester. Mentor students interested in submitting projects to high school science research competitions, including, but not limited to the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, and the Siemens Competition. Aid students in preparation for submission to broader scientific conferences. Administrative Responsibilities – Assist in administrative tasks related to research programs and initiatives. Participate in meetings and contribute to strategic planning. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in the sciences is required PhD or Masters; At least five years of experience in the scientific community, ensuring a level of expertise and confidence necessary for providing effective scientific mentorship to students; Preference for scientific laboratory experience; Experience mentoring students in research; Demonstrated ability to design, implement and present lab-based scientific research projects; Desire to work closely with alumni, students and faculty to enhance the Bronx Science community; Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills necessary;


  • This is a full-time position based out of the Manne Institute in the Bronx. There are opportunities for flexibility and virtual work. The position includes full benefits. Salary range is between $70,000 - $110,000 annually.
