The Search

Washington University School of Medicine (WashU Medicine) seeks visionary and highly collaborative scientific leaders to apply to our search for the next Chair of the Department of Developmental Biology. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs and the Dean of the School of Medicine and serving as a member of the Executive Faculty, the chair will have the opportunity to build on the rich and distinguished history of the Developmental Biology department and provide strategic leadership to WashU Medicine broadly.

For over 100 years, the Department of Developmental Biology has been one of the top-ranked programs in the nation for interdisciplinary pre-clinical/basic sciences including developmental biology, neurodevelopment, stem cell biology, genetics, physiology, aging, and other scientific disciplines. Throughout history, the department has made major discoveries and has had Nobel Prize winners among its faculty. Today, the department has grown to represent a broad range of contemporary issues in development biology and is comprised of 20 tenured or tenure track faculty, eight research track faculty, and 36 affiliated faculty members. The department is home to many innovative research cores and centers that support a broad array of research activities:

  • Center of Regenerative Medicine (CRM)
  • Bioinformatics Research Core within the CRM
  • Precision Medicine Integrated Experimental Resources (PreMIER)
  • Centralized Histology Service and Innovation Center
  • Human Cells, Tissues, and Organoids (hCTO) Core
  • Zebrafish Facility
  • Post-baccalaureate Program

Candidate Qualifications

Qualified candidates for the Chair position will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant scientific discipline and be eligible for appointment at the professor level with a minimum of 10 years of experience in academic leadership. We seek candidates with a distinguished record of funding and scholarly achievements and a history of interdisciplinary collaboration. A successful track record of effective mentorship, faculty development, and recruitment with experience in administration including budget management and strategic planning is required.
