The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (https://engineering.ucsc.edu/departments/computer-science-and-engineering) at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for positions at the ranks of Assistant and Associate Teaching Professor. We seek to hire up to two candidates. The successful candidates will develop and teach courses within the undergraduate and graduate curricula with a particular focus on student success in entryway undergraduate education in one or more of the following fields: Programming, Software Engineering, Computer Systems, Operating Systems, Hardware, Computer Architectures, and Machine Learning. Selected candidates will develop programs of academic scholarship in either or both engineering pedagogy and their technical areas of specialty. As educational leaders in one of the largest computing programs in the US, selected candidates will become leaders of curriculum and pedagogical development in the department and the school and will be well poised to impact pedagogy at a national level.

The working titles of these positions are Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, while the payroll titles are Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment or Lecturer with Security of Employment. These titles are used differently at the University of California than at some other institutions. Important facts to note are: these positions have all the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate; “Security of Employment'' is directly analogous to tenure; and the positions earn sabbatical credit and have summer flexibility. Faculty in these positions have Principal Investigator status for the purpose of grant applications and administration. Faculty in these positions, as with all faculty, are regularly reviewed for further advancement and salary increases. The Security of Employment series is evaluated on achievements in the areas of teaching, professional scholarship and activity, and University and public service as set by the University of California system.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is part of the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz. UC Santa Cruz is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an association of the top research universities in the US. Baskin Engineering is home to six departments contributing to the richness of its research in materials, devices, and instruments; engineering mathematics; computing; and health engineering. Several research centers contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the university, including the Center for Research in Open Source Software, Center for Cyberphysical Systems Research, Center for Computational Experience, and others. The CSE department has nationally and internationally known researchers in theoretical computer science, programming languages, security, distributed systems, storage systems, computer architectures, machine learning, natural language processing, vision, VLSI, and networking. Nestled in a redwood forest above the city of Santa Cruz and close to Silicon Valley, our beautiful residential campus has a rich history of embracing groundbreaking interdisciplinary work and building deep research ties with the local high-tech industry. Our proximity to Silicon Valley, including a second campus in Santa Clara, affords unique and exciting opportunities for collaboration with industry researchers, as well as with faculty and students at other San Francisco Bay Area universities.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach gateway undergraduate courses that form the fundamental core of our curriculum. These courses include, but are not limited to, the following: Computer Systems and Assembly (CSE12), Embedded Design (CSE121), Computer Systems and C Programming (CSE13S), Introduction to Data Structures (CSE101), Applied Discrete Mathematics (CSE16), Programming in Python (CSE20/30), Machine Learning Basics (CSE40), and Introduction to Networking and Internet (CSE80N). In their application, candidates should indicate the number of these introductory courses they are prepared to teach.
Furthermore, we highly value candidates who can contribute to teaching upper-division undergraduate courses and graduate-level courses.
