Working for the Department/Faculty
The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta has a long and illustrious history dating back to the early 20th century and the ground-breaking research contributions of our first Chair, James Collip, to the development of insulin. Over the last century, biochemical research has expanded to impact diverse areas of human health and disease.
This research has shed light on fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders (including prion diseases), infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders.
Position
The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta is looking for applicants to fill the position of Assistant Professor, additionally, the selected candidate will also be recommended for a Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Chair in Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Biochemistry. We are particularly interested in applicants who will apply artificial intelligence and/or machine learning approaches to the understanding of macromolecular structure and interactions (such as protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid and protein-membrane interactions), drug design, biochemical and proteomic big data analysis, biomarker identification, and systems biology. The Department has existing strengths in structural biology including a new cryoEM facility, proteomics and mass spectrometry, super-resolution cell imaging, membrane protein structure/function, and drug discovery. The applicant will further benefit from interactions and support of our partner research institutes: the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA); the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology (LKSIoV); the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI); and the Women's and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI).
The successful candidate will be nominated for a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence (CCAI) Chair that includes five years of initial research funding. This position is part of a University of Alberta cluster hire in the intersection of Machine Learning and other areas of existing research strength in, for example, Health, Energy, and Indigenous Initiatives in Health and the Humanities. The successful candidate will also become an Amii Fellow, joining a highly collegial institute of world-class Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning researchers, and have access to Amii internal funding resources, administrative support, and a highly collaborative environment.
Amii is one of three institutes named in the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy and consists of more than 35 artificial intelligence (AI) & machine learning (ML) researchers at the U of A, as well as CCAI Chairs at post-secondary institutions across Western Canada. The University of Alberta is world-renowned for its strength in AI and ML; the cohort that includes this position will bring together and foster the next generation of scientists leading the development of machine learning.
