(I)Profile of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Kunming Medical University

The School of Basic Medical Sciences was formerly known as Department of Basic Medical Sciences, which was established in 1986 and renamed in 2000. So far, it has become a medical personnel training and scientific research base engaged in teaching, scientific research, student management and social services. It has nine departments, i.e. Department of Human Anatomy and Histoembryology, Department of Pathology and Pathophysiology, Department of Pathogen Biology and Immunology, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Cell Biology and Medical Genetics, Department of Pharmacology, Department of Physiology, Department of Physical Mathematics and Computer Science, and a Basic Medicine Experimental Teaching Center. In addition, it has built such organizations as Office of Party and Government Affairs, Teaching Affairs Office, Discipline Research and Graduate Management Office, Student Work Office, and Chinese Communist Youth League Committee.

Currently, the school owns 222 faculty members, including 24 with senior professional titles and 89 with deputy senior professional titles. 89% of the school’s teachers have earned a doctoral (master) degree. The school has 24 doctoral supervisors, 72 master supervisors, one high-end talent of Yunnan Province, one “New Century Excellent Talents” of the Ministry of Education, two experts enjoying special government subsidies of the State Council, one famous Yunling teacher, five provincial-level famous teachers, and seven young and middle-aged academic technology leaders and reserve talents of Yunnan Province. In 2018, it was approved to provide doctoral programs in primary discipline of Basic Medical Sciences and set a center for post-doctoral studies of Yunnan Province. Now it provides one doctoral program in a primary discipline of Basic Medical Sciences and one master program in a primary discipline of Biology. It owns two provincial-level innovation teams, one provincial-level first-class discipline, two key laboratories of universities in Yunnan Province, and two provincial-level international cooperation bases. Its discipline of Basic Medical Sciences was approved as a provincial-level first-class type-A plateau discipline during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period and won the key support for provincial first-class disciplines during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period.

At present, the school provides 7 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 8 provincial-level first-class courses, 3 provincial-level excellent courses, 2 provincial-level excellent open video courses, 3 provincial-level bilingual model courses, and 2 provincial-level ideological and political education model courses. It owns 1 provincial-level teaching team, 3 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 provincial-level virtual simulation experiment center.

The school manages more than 3,000 undergraduate (in the first year to third year) and graduate students majoring in Clinical Medicine. It provides 123 courses to undergraduate, graduate, international and continuing education students (including 62 courses for undergraduate students; 16 MBBS courses, and 42 courses for graduate students) as well as more than 40 elective courses for undergraduate students.

(II) Profile of the School of Public Health of Kunming Medical University

The School of Public Health was established in 2001 on the basis of the Department of Preventive Medicine, which was established in 1989 on the basis of the Department of Health that was established in 1978. In 1979, the Department of Health enrolled undergraduate students majoring in preventive Medicine. In 1985, it started its postgraduate education. In 2011, the School of Public Health began to enroll doctoral students. Now, it provides doctoral and master programs in primary discipline of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. It has set a provincial-level center for post-doctoral studies. Its discipline of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has ranked among first-class disciplines (characteristic disciplines) in Yunnan Province. Its major of Preventive Medicine has ranked among national first-class majors. Upon application together with the West China School of Public Health of Sichuan University, the School of Public Health of Kunming Medical University was approved to be a national “high-level School of Public Health”. In 2022, it was named an “Advanced Health Collective in Yunnan Province” by the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee and Yunnan Provincial Government. It is a public health and preventive medicine personnel training base and scientific research center engaged in teaching, scientific research and social services in Yunnan Province.

Currently, the school has 81 regular faculty members, with an average age of 45. Of them, 15 have senior professional titles (including three Level-2 professors) and 36 have deputy senior professional titles. 91% of the school’s teachers have earned a doctoral or master degree. There are 25 on-the-job doctoral supervisors and 114 master supervisors (including 53 off-campus supervisors).

After many years’ accumulation and development, the School of Public Health has gradually shaped up its distinct characteristics and advantages in five aspects, i.e. disease epidemiology and prevention and control of risk factors in ethnic minority areas in the borderland, women and children’s health promotion, research on the impact of environmental and occupational factors on health, public nutrition and development and utilization of Yunnan’s characteristic edible resources, cross-border reproductive health, ecological health, and protection of traditional ethnic medicine research. In recent five years, it undertook one sub-project under a national key research and development plan, one key project of a major philosophy and social science research subject of the Ministry of Education, 23 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, two projects of National Social Science Foundation, three international cooperation projects, 59 research projects at the provincial and ministerial level, 20 research projects at the provincial departmental level, and 71 research projects of other levels. It owns one key laboratory of the Education Department of Yunnan Province, one provincial-level innovation team, two university science and technology innovation teams, one university research platform, and two school-level innovation teams. It has published 643 papers (as the first author or corresponding author), including 185 English papers and 458 Chinese papers. Moreover, it published 23 monographs and 51 textbooks and developed one piece of software. Its 39 patent applications have been granted. Of them, 14 were transferred. It has obtained nine computer software copyrights. It worked out 2 provincial-level local standards and 3 municipal-level industry standards. In addition, it won one first prize for provincial-level outstanding philosophy and social science achievements, one second prize of the Ministry of Education for outstanding scientific research achievements of colleges & universities, one first prize, one second prize and two third prizes of provincial-level health science and technology achievement award, and one provincial-level second prize and two third prizes for scientific and technological advancement.
