I. About ZZU

Zhengzhou University (ZZU), as one of the “211 Project” key universities in China, is included in the national scheme of ‘Development of World-Class Universities and World-Class Disciplines’ and co-developed by the Ministry of Education and Henan Provincial Government. As a comprehensive university, there are 12 fields of study available at our university including Liberal arts, Science, Engineering and Medicine, etc. Three disciplines (Materials Science, Chemistry, Clinical Medicine) are included in the national scheme of ‘Development of World-Class Universities and World-Class Disciplines’ and six are recognized as national key (being cultivated) disciplines. We have 12 national research platforms such as the National Engineering Research Center and the National Engineering Lab. With a total of over 5700 faculty members, there are 17 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Foreign Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, two Fellows of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, four Academicians of overseas academies, 61 winners of national talent plans or grants. ZZU has established a three-step strategy to strive for a world-class comprehensive and research-oriented university by the middle of this century.

II. About Discipline of Materials Science of ZZU

The School of Materials Science and Engineering of ZZU was founded in 2001 by the merger of the Department of Materials and the School of Architectural Engineering (some majors) of the former Zhengzhou University, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Mathematical Mechanics (some majors) of the former Zhengzhou University of Technology. It was jointly operated with Henan Provincial Institute of Resources and Materials Industry Technology in September 2019. Zhongyuan Critical Metals Laboratory was established on the basis of the Green Metallurgy Research Institute and the Department of Metallurgical, School of Chemical Engineering in 2022. The discipline of Materials Science is covered by the National Engineering Research Center for Advanced Polymer Processing Technology, State Center for International Cooperation on Designer Low-Carbon & Environmental Mouaterials, Zhongyuan Critical Metals Laboratory, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering, Henan Institute of Advanced Technology, Henan Provincial Institute of Resources and Materials Industry Technology. The discipline of Materials Science is included in the national scheme of ‘Development of World-Class Universities and World-Class Disciplines’. 《Energy & Environmental Materials》journal co-founded by the School of Materials Science and Engineering ZZU and John Wiley & Sons，Inc. has been a top journal in the fields of energy and materials. We have over 1147 full-time undergraduates, 1438 postgraduates currently studying on campus. With a total of over 237 faculty members, there are one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Prof. Changyu Shen), three Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Prof. Jilin He, Prof. Jiongtian Liu, Prof. Zhongwei Zhao), one Foreign Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (Prof. S. Ravi Pradip Silva), over 100 winners of national talent plans or grants. Facing the major strategic needs of the country and the developments of regional economic, we built a talent training and scientific research base featuring resource materials, combined the integration of science and education and the integration of industry and education to train innovative talents with international vision, becoming a discipline with important influence in the field of global materials science and engineering. In order to do so, we have adopted the strategy of enhancing development through attracting high performers. With the idea of “top-notch talents breakthrough, team integration, youth cultivation and structural optimization”, we have implemented Distinguished Professor Program to attract more high-level talents and Youth Talent Cultivation Program to create an ideal environment for the youth talents to develop.
