The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice in Biological Data Science. A person fulfilling this position is expected to teach graduate courses within the Biological Data Science Master’s degree program as well as contribute to the design and leadership of the program. Additionally, the position requires the mentorship of graduate students and the contribution of service to the school, college, university, and the profession. Applicants must present evidence of broad interdisciplinary expertise and/or direct experience and training in any area in computational biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, applied mathematics, physics, or computer science with applications in biology. This is a non-tenure-track academic year teaching position (9-month).  Faculty duties include teaching in person and online. Subsequent one-year appointments may be offered, under the same terms and conditions, at the discretion of the college and university. It seeks candidates who will create a climate of diversity that attracts and supports the success of students of all races, nationalities, and genders. This position will begin in August 2024.

Faculty in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences have the opportunity to work in a unit that values innovative research and education equally while being housed in an R1 university. Essential Functions of the Position:

The individual filling this position is expected to:

  • Provide in-person and online high-quality instruction in interdisciplinary areas encompassed by the Biological Data Science program at the undergraduate and graduate level 
  • Develop, maintain, and update course materials as appropriate to the field and modality.
  • Advance impactful education through programmatic responsibilities including graduate mentorship and innovative curricular development, and cultural-responsive teaching and mentoring practices; Coordinate regular training and supervision of graduate student course assistants. Convert professional real-world experiences to classroom learning and programs. Contribute service to the school, college, university, and the profession. Provide course coordination for classes with multiple sections; Support and/or lead the ongoing development of the Biological Data Science program; Advance collegiality; we value a highly collaborative community and culture that prioritizes mutual respect, equitable inclusion, support, and collective success of our faculty staff, and students.  All employees are expected to contribute to a positive and healthy work environment and role model professional behavior for our students.


Required Qualifications:


  • Doctorate or terminal degree in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Ecology, Physics or related field at the time of hire Sustained (5+years) professional experience in the area of Bioinformatics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Ecology, Physics or related field.

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Creation of course curriculum or professional training.
  • Successful record of advanced professional mentorship;
  • Successful record of programmatic development and on-going program assessment and evaluation;
  • Experience in culturally responsive teaching and mentoring practices; 
  • Established collaborations with industry partners and/or previous industry experience. Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including first-generation college students, non-traditional, low-income college students, and those from under-represented minorities.
