The University is seeking a seasoned professional to serve as the Director of Sustainability/Net-Zero.
Reporting to the Vice-President for Administration and Business, the Director will manage the Sustainability/Net-Zero Office (currently with 8 people) in providing the strategic direction and oversight of the Office as well as to develop, coordinate, and implement the three key focus areas of the Office, including facilitating HKUST's long-range sustainability plans (2028 Sustainability Challenge and Net-Zero Carbon 2050); building sustainability capacity across academic divisions and research centers; and building the sustainability brand for HKUST locally and regionally. Key responsibilities include:
(a) overseeing the development and implementation of Sustainability Strategic Plan, including research, gap analysis and target setting to meet the goals of the Plan;
(b) engaging various internal and external stakeholders and facilitating working groups and committees to support the University in achieving the sustainability goals (including the Net-Zero Carbon 2050 initiative);
(c) guiding the Experiential Learning Team to meet the sustainability education goals and targets in the 2028 Sustainability Challenge;
(d) driving the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab initiative by working with faculty, staff, alumni, outside partners and campus units to develop project proposals to demonstrate sustainability solutions;
(e) leading the Sustainability/Net-Zero Office to create and sustain a culture of performance with continuous improvement and delivery of best practices; and
(f) representing the University in selected Hong Kong committees and councils relating to sustainability and engaging in international collaborations for building the HKUST brand as a sustainability-driven and cutting-edge institution.
Applicants should have at least 15 years of solid experience in running and overseeing sustainability programs and preferably an advanced degree holder. Demonstrated leadership with adoption of effective change management techniques and strategies for engaging different stakeholders to facilitate a transition towards sustainable practices is required. The appointee should also have a high-level competency in green technology management, including strong understanding of energy systems, green buildings, and smart technology. The appointee should be passionate with demonstrated experience in promoting sustainability for diverse groups within a large institutional setting; and possesses strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills and the ability to work in teams and build coalitions. Good knowledge of the workings in consumer marketing research and sustainability education are added advantages. A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is necessary, with knowledge of Chinese (Cantonese & Putonghua) preferred. (Duration: 2 years, renewable)
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
