The National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI),
Information Engineering Branch (IEB) is recruiting for a Staff Scientist 1 to support the Sequence
Enhancements, Tools, and Delivery (SeqPlus) Program, which includes eukaryotic, prokaryotic, and viral Reference Sequence (RefSeq) databases, the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST), the Conserved Domains Database (CDD), the NCBI Pathogen Detection Pipeline, NCBI Datasets, and sequence visualization and analysis tools. NLM is one of 27 Institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
NCBI performs research in computational biology and creates and maintains information systems and computational tools for the biological research and clinical communities. This involves the
organization and enhancement of NCBI's sequence content and delivery of data, tools, and displays to accelerate research and maximize the impact on human health.
NLM NCBI IEB is looking for an outstanding candidate with extensive experience in sequence data
generation, curation, analysis, and management. The responsibilities of this position include the
• communicating and collaborating with SeqPlus and IEB leadership to discuss policy, priorities,
• providing strategic recommendations to SeqPlus and IEB leadership for development and engagement
so that researchers may take maximal advantage of NCBI's sequence content as relevant to their
research and/or sequence data analysis needs;
• assisting the SeqPlus Program Head in coordinating work priorities across a suite of multi‐
disciplinary teams comprised of software developers, data curators, and data analysts;
• supporting the SeqPlus Program Head and team leads in communicating with and engaging in
collaborations with external entities and institutions (with an emphasis on curating or organizing
sequence data and metadata or developing tools that consume it);
• supporting SeqPlus operational goals by collaborating with other program staff including
managers, subject matter experts (SMEs), product owners, project managers, developers, and others;
• providing consultation related to informatics applications for sequence data curation,
annotation, analysis, and display;
• evaluating and communicating on solutions for data/information and process quality, efficiency,
• representing NCBI’s products, standards, and values externally through participation in working
groups, committees, presenting at conferences, webinars, and/or publications;
• serving as a liaison between other IEB programs to facilitate SeqPlus‐related needs;
• working in an Agile Framework for product development.
The ideal candidate may or may not be a United States citizen and must have a doctoral degree. We are looking for an individual with:
• a Ph.D. or equivalent from an accredited college in a biomedical science or related
• three or more years of postdoctoral or other job experience related to biological data curation,
data analysis, or scientific data management;
• evidence of leadership as demonstrated by prior positions, role in working groups or
collaborations or conferences/workshops, or letters of recommendation;
• experience in, and an outstanding track record of, managing or significantly supporting the
management of a scientific program area;
• proven ability to successfully engage in multi‐disciplinary collaborative projects;
• demonstrated ability to initiate and successfully deliver bioinformatic applications focused on
organizing and serving biological sequence data;
• demonstrated knowledge of biological data community standards and sequence analysis
• outstanding communication, project management, and organizational skills; and
• demonstrated ability to work closely and productively with data product teams
