Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences

Boise State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor within the Department of Biological Sciences. We are seeking candidates with the potential to develop an externally funded research program that asks questions in the biomedical sciences with a focus on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease. The position will contribute to graduate and undergraduate course development and delivery and create experiential learning opportunities aligned with their expertise. In their application materials, candidates should articulate how they plan to contribute to the growth of biomedical research capacity at Boise State University through individual and collaborative research and their potential to contribute to large, programmatic NIH grants. We will prioritize candidates that complement or synergize with our department's strengths including cancer, therapeutics, infectious disease, inflammation, the human microbiome, and molecular neurobiology. Candidates should describe the research infrastructure, including model systems, that they would utilize and support. The new hire will contribute to the interdisciplinary Biomolecular Sciences Graduate Program and will also have the opportunity to recruit graduate students through several other PhD programs including Biomedical Engineering, Computing, Materials Science, and Ecology, Evolution & Behavior as appropriate for their research program. The Department of Biological Sciences offers a flexible workload policy that allows a balance of research and teaching that is appropriate for career stage and ambitions. Early career faculty are offered a reduced teaching and service workload. After an initial semester without teaching, an Assistant Professor would typically teach the equivalent of 1 class per semester (1:1 teaching workload). The position will have dedicated research space and access to shared research facilities, such as the Biomolecular Research Center. This position is a part of our departmental growth related to biomolecular and biomedical research and teaching. In addition to this position, we are hiring a Developmental Neurobiologist and a Teaching Track Faculty in Genetics, Cellular, and Molecular Biology.

Minimum qualifications:

• A PhD and postdoc experience in a field related to Biomedical Sciences
• A record of research and scholarship in Biomedical Sciences

   

Preferred qualifications:

• A short-term (e.g., 2-3 years) research plan and a vision for a long-term program (e.g., 5-10 years) as described in the submitted Research Statement.
• A plan for how the research could be funded by the NIH and other agencies, as described in the submitted Research Statement.
• A biomedical research focus in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease that includes a plan for the use of in vivo experimental models relevant to human health. 

• An interest in developing and delivering curriculum as described in the Teaching Statement. Please include a description of the applicant’s commitment to monitoring and improving teaching and thoughtful course design.
• A commitment to creating inclusive research and teaching environments where all students are supported, as articulated in both the Research and Teaching Statements.

   

Required application materials:  1) Cover Letter that explicitly states the candidate’s potential contributions to the Department of Biological Sciences and the Biomolecular Sciences Graduate Program; 

2) Curriculum Vitae, which includes employment history (include dates of employment), experience with grant writing, publications, courses taught, leadership roles and responsibilities, mentorship of students, and professional activities including service; 

3) Research Statement (two-page maximum) that includes a short-term research plan and a vision for a long-term program. The Research Statement should outline how the research plans will advance biomedical research at Boise State and create an inclusive environment for all students. The research statement should include plans for extramural funding from NIH and other agencies. Applicants are encouraged to describe how they might complement existing biomedical research at Boise State with a research focus in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease that includes the use of an in vivo experimental model;

4) Teaching Statement (one-page maximum) that includes a description of the candidate’s teaching philosophy, a description of your experiences teaching, and how you would design a course to support the success of all students; 

5) Publications - Please provide a merged pdf with copies of three publications that demonstrate your research accomplishments and potential.
