The Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (http://www.hajim.rochester.edu/me). Applicants at the assistant professor level are preferred, but exceptional candidates at a senior level will also be considered. The expected starting date is July 2024.
Candidates with expertise in experimental materials science or applied mechanics are strongly encouraged to apply. Research areas include but are not limited to the development of x-ray spectroscopy diagnostic techniques such as scattering, absorption spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, or resonant inelastic scattering, and other advanced measurement instrumentation to understand the structure-property relationships, light-matter interaction, and other behaviors of quantum materials. A PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field is required. The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent, extramurally funded research program, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, participate in departmental activities, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community and the curriculum. The University of Rochester is a private research university located in upstate New York, a region famous for its diverse cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities. In addition to the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the university is home to the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Simon Business School, and the Eastman School of Music. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has strong ties and active research collaborations with the Materials Science Program, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE, where extensive x-ray spectroscopy and other diagnostic capabilities are available and developed,) the Institute of Optics, the Center for Matter at Atomic Pressures (CMAP), the Goergen Institute for Data Science, and University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC).

Salary ranges are $100,000 - $110,000 and $120,000 - $145,000 for the assistant and associate levels, respectively. The referenced pay ranges represent the 9-month base pay range. Individual salaries will be established based on market data, experience, and expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
