The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (JSMBS) at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) invites applications for a faculty position in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We seek a colleague who will build a nationally recognized research program working on any molecular, cellular, and/or immunological aspect of microbial pathogenesis, but applicants with programs in virology are especially encouraged to apply.

Department of Microbiology and Immunology: The department is strongly research-oriented, with major programs in virology, bacteriology, immunology, mycology, and parasitology. The department has an active research faculty containing 13 primary faculty members and a number of adjunct faculty as part of the graduate research faculty. Most departmental faculty members are also members of The Witebsky Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology, an interdisciplinary center within the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The Department and the University provide a highly collaborative environment with many collaborative projects and grants both within and outside UB. For more details on faculty and research programs, please visit: https://medicine.buffalo.edu/departments/micro.html and https://medicine.buffalo.edu/departments/micro/research/witebsky.html.

Facilities and Research Partners: The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is housed in a new state-of-the-art facility on the downtown Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus adjacent to Buffalo General and Oishei Children’s Hospitals. Also nearby are the Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) and the Hauptmann-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI), which have international reputations in cancer research and structural biology, respectively.  Department faculty collaborate extensively with those at JSMBS, including at the Clinical and Translational Research Center, the UB Schools of Dental Medicine, Public Health, and Pharmacy, as well as with faculty at RPCI and HWI.  Available resources include enhanced biocontainment (BSL3/ABSL3) suites and excellent core facilities including Genomics and Bioinformatics, Proteomics and Bioanalysis, Confocal Microscopy and Flow Cytometry, Small Molecule Screening, Pathology and Tissue Procurement, and Histology. Also available are a Gene Modulation Facility, Gene Targeting and Transgenic Facility, the Center for Computational Research, and a vivarium.

Community Environment: Buffalo—the City of Good Neighbors—is the second-largest city in New York State. Yet, it’s a big city with a hometown feel. World-class art galleries and museums, a comprehensive citywide system of parks and green space designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and major and minor league sports teams are just a few of the wide array of cultural and recreational elements that make Buffalo such a great place to study, work and live. Applicants at higher levels will also be expected to have extramural funding. All individuals hired will be expected to establish and/or maintain an on-site extramurally funded and productive research program, to contribute to undergraduate, graduate, and professional teaching, and to assume various administrative responsibilities of the department. The school/department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research and service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
