The College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time tenured professor and department head for the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering with an 11-month academic appointment beginning Fall of 2024. The college is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and visionary leader who can continue to advance the department. The successful applicant will be an innovative thinker with a strategic vision for guiding the department to a higher level of excellence and who can communicate this vision to a constituency that includes academia, government, industry, and former students. The candidate must have notable accomplishments and experience in research, academic or industry leadership, teaching and scholarship.

 

Candidates must demonstrate a vision for supporting, directing, and enhancing the goals of the department. This leadership position includes opportunities for research and teaching as well as expanding the department’s interdisciplinary research and interaction with life sciences, Army Futures Command, smart manufacturing initiatives, microelectronics initiatives, innovative energy alternatives, and unconventional energy at Texas A&M University.

The department head will:

  • Demonstrate leadership, mentoring and administrative skills;
  • Continue a successful distinguished research and academic record commensurate with the title of tenured full professor;
  • Promote continued growth of the department in research excellence and graduate education;
  • Lead and motivate high standards for continued excellence and innovation in undergraduate education;
  • Build commitment and support for the department from a wide variety of constituent groups such as former students, industry and government labs;
  • Provide effective budget management and promote an environment of integrity to stimulate faculty, staff and students to succeed at the highest levels;
  • Organize successful fundraising through the pursuit of research funding opportunities (grants and contracts), scholarship and endowments through strengthening relationships with diverse stakeholder groups.

Department Information
As one of fifteen departments within the Texas A&M University College of Engineering, the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering is proud to be among the top Chemical Engineering programs in the United States, providing unique cutting-edge educational and research opportunities. The department has strong programs that cover a broad spectrum of traditional, emerging and interdisciplinary areas of interest, including biomedical and biochemical engineering; complex fluids; computational chemical engineering; energy transition (led by the Energy Institute and the Gas & Fuels Research Center); materials; microelectronics; microfluidics; nanotechnology; process systems engineering; reaction engineering; thermodynamics;  process safety, led by the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, and sustainability.

The Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering has a 205,000-ft2 facility in the Jack E. Brown Chemical Engineering building, with another 16,000-ft2 facility in the Giesecke Engineering Research Building shared with the Texas A&M Energy Institute. The department has 28 full-time tenure/tenure-track faculty; 8 Professors of Practice; 5 lecturers; 700+ undergraduate students; over 260 graduate students; and over $36 million in endowments. The department had over $11M in total research expenditures during FY22. Among public schools, the department was ranked 14th for its graduate program and 12th for its undergraduate program. The department emphasizes balance between basic and applied research with a wide range of strengths and depth in fundamental analytical, computational, and experimental methods. Current and recent teaming with the DOE/AIChE RAPID (The Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment) Manufacturing Institute for Process Intensification, the DOE EPIXC (Electrified Processes for Industry without Carbon) Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute, DOE Battery500 Consortium, NIMBL (The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals), BioMADE, NCTM (National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing), a DOE Frontier Research Center (EFRC) Reconfigurable Electronic Materials Inspired by Nonlinear Neuron Dynamics, and Army Futures Command expand the existing research portfolio.

Qualifications
Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field and present evidence of credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure, including a distinguished research and academic record commensurate with the title.
