Position Description: KNSM invites applications for a full-time tenured position at the full professor level with executive management level experience. In addition to serving as faculty of KNSM, the successful candidate will serve as the Director of the Sydney and JL Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance (Huffines). The Director of Huffines is responsible for the overall strategic and intellectual direction and is expected to seek and secure funding to grow the Institute, allocate financial resources, and oversee its day-to-day operations. The Director is responsible for creating and sustaining productive relationships with leaders/stakeholders, faculty, and practitioners, as well as the community, to ensure initiatives are informed by and address the needs of the Texas A&M System at large. The Director builds and engages in cross-disciplinary collaboration with institutions to facilitate scaling and dissemination of Institute programs in an effort to raise visibility of the Institute and its activities regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Director is successful in identifying and developing philanthropic, public, and constituent support for the Institute. This Director maintains an impactful and internationally recognized basic or applied research program that can include, but is not limited to: nutrition, metabolism, hydration, wearables, cardiorespiratory fitness, concussion, strength & conditioning, sports science, tactical athletics or special populations, injury prevention, recovery, and/or rehabilitation. The Director will also serve as a fully integrated member of the Department of KNSM.

Qualifications: PhD in kinesiology or related field. Suitable individuals must possess strong leadership skills and a track record of successful management. Top candidates will have a record of multi-disciplinary collaboration, knowledge of current sport science practices, and familiarity with data science. Candidates should possess strong and effective communication skills with faculty, staff, practitioners, coaches, and other professionals. Candidates should demonstrate an active and impactful research record. Candidates should have experience as an effective teacher and advisor of undergraduate and graduate students. Preferred: Experience working in a performance-based atmosphere, whether that be athletics, tactical, or spaceflight. Experience overseeing budgets and familiarity with administrative processes. Ability or experience with fundraising.

Responsibilities: The Director will serve as a member of the Department of KNSM and as the Director of Huffines. The Director is responsible for strategic and intellectual planning, fundraising, and raising the visibility for the Huffines Institute. The Director is expected to oversee day-to-day operations of the Institute, which includes staff and budget management. The Director is expected to continue and expand existing internal and external collaborations within Texas A&M University, including athletics and academics, Corps of Cadets, Texas A&M System institutions, and the greater Texas community. In addition, the Director is responsible for communicating with faculty, practitioners, coaches, and other professionals, as well as disseminating research and information on human performance to the lay public.

The anticipated workload of this position is 20% teaching, 30% research, and 50% administrative appointment for Huffines, which includes service. Within the School of Education and Human Development, workloads are assessed and adjusted, as needed, on an annual basis.  

Appointment: This is a nine-month full-time tenured position, with the possibility of an additional summer appointment contingent upon need and availability of funds, and an anticipated starting date of August 1, 2024. Salary, benefits, and compensation packages are highly competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position is eligible to hold the Debbie and Mike Hilliard '73 Endowed Professor of Kinesiology, pending an internal review according to SEHD guidelines.

About the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management at Texas A&M University: The Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management (KNSM) is the largest academic department at Texas A&M University and is the home to three programs: Kinesiology, Sport Management, and the Physical Education Activity Program. About the Huffines Institute: Huffines is a privately endowed institute that facilitates research, application, and communication between sports scientists, practitioners, and lay population. The Huffines Institute is currently located in the West Campus Player Development Center, at the heart of A&M Athletic facilities. It features approximately 5,000 sq ft that encompasses a large testing laboratory. The institute is currently equipped with 4 cardiorespiratory stress stations, 2 metabolic carts, 4 force platforms, a DEXA body composition scanner, an underwater treadmill, and additional equipment. Huffines facilitates research for Texas A&M faculty by providing seed funding to faculty and students, low-cost services, and space to conduct research studies. The Testing Center within Huffines provides annual, low-cost cardiopulmonary stress testing to local fire and police departments and other agencies, as well as Texas A&M Athletics, and the community. Huffines produces a podcast, We Do the Heavy Lifting, and has had over 34,000 listens across 155 countries. They also produce the Huffines Human Performance Minute that is distributed through their website as well as the local public television station. The annual Hilliard Discussion is now given in a hybrid format and is reachable worldwide. Huffines has previously incubated and launched the now Thornton-McFerrin Coaching Academy. The Huffines currently comprises two associated KNSM faculty, one part-time staff person, and multiple graduate and undergraduate student workers.
