The State Key Laboratory of Tea Plant Biology and Utilization is based on the national key (cultivation) discipline of Anhui Agricultural University -Tea Science. This discipline was formerly the Tea Special Discipline at College of Agronomy, Fudan University. It is the cradle of tea science discipline in China, and has been selected into the world-class discipline construction plan of Anhui Province and the peak discipline of Anhui Province. At present, the laboratory mainly focuses on four research areas: tea plant physiological ecology and germplasm innovation, tea plant secondary metabolism and quality chemistry, health function and mechanism of action of tea, and quality safety and processing utilization of tea.
The laboratory has:
1) First-class research facilities: the total area dedicated to research is 12,000 m2, equipped with instruments and devices that cost more than 100 million yuan. Ten major technology platforms have been established, including molecular biology of tea plant, bioinformatics, metabolomics, isolation and structural identification, cytological analysis, experimental animals, quality and safety inspection technology, quality chemistry and control technology, physiology and nutrition, and spectral analysis.
2) Top-notch research teams: the laboratory currently has 74 scientific researchers, including 33 professors, 4 national-level talents, 28 returnees from overseas study, and 27 PhD supervisors.
The laboratory has a multidisciplinary research team, which has been recognized as one of the first provincial scientific and technological innovation teams in Anhui Province, the Ministry of Education’s talent and innovation team, the top ten outstanding industrial innovation team of the province, and the fifth National Advanced Group of Professional and Technical Talents. In 2016, the Tea Chemistry and Health Team of the laboratory was recognized as the International Cooperation Joint Laboratory of the Ministry of Education. In 2020, the laboratory was listed in the Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Program. The laboratory has become an important international research base for tea, a hub for excellent scientific and technological professionals, and an incubator for high-level talents.

Principal investigators and postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply in the fields of: synthetic biology, genome editing, tea processing and deep processing, plant secondary metabolism, developmental biology of horticultural plants (tea plants, etc.), tea plant physiology and ecology, plant protection, intelligent machinery, food flavor chemistry, nutrition and health sciences and other related disciplines.
