The University of Kentucky, Department of Internal Medicine seeks an inaugural Vice Chair of Research and Innovation to provide overall leadership and coordination of the Department’s basic, clinical and translational research programs. This transformational leadership position comes at an opportune time in the history of the Department which has a growing research portfolio, availability of significant institutional collaborations and research infrastructure, as well as new Departmental leadership with the resources and vision to prioritize and promote research excellence throughout the Department. This position is available to tenured or tenure-track candidates at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

The Vice Chair for Research and Innovation will build the basic science, clinical and translational research infrastructure within the Department as directed by the Chair of Medicine.  In addition, there will be key collaborations across the university.  The Vice Chair of Research and Innovation will represent the Department in matters of research and will work in collaboration with the overall research program and direction outlined by the Vice Dean for Research of the College of Medicine. This role will also collaborate with the Office of the Vice President of Research of the University, other Basic Science and Clinical Departments, and leaders of multiple research core facilities, centers, and research institutes to enhance and coordinate a departmental research infrastructure which will reduce barriers for clinician-scientists, create research operational efficiencies, and facilitate overall growth of the Department of Internal Medicine’s research portfolio. 

Qualifications
•    Terminal degree in medicine or basic science (MD or equivalent, MD/PhD, PhD)
•    Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor 
•    Strong history of high-impact publications and securing extramural funding
•    Ability to develop team science and project grants
•    For practicing physicians, appropriate board certification and eligibility for unrestricted licensure are required

This role will be supported by significant institutional and departmental resources, two associate vice-chairs, departmental research staff, and more. A competitive research start-up package and an endowed chair/professorship may be available based on area of research and needs of the successful candidate.
