Summary

The Research Technician I will involve primary research activities in the laboratory of neural circuits and neurotherapeutics in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine. The research will involve the use of multi-disciplinary approaches in neuroscience, anatomy, development, genetics, physiology, and behavior. The position will include opportunities to learn and develop new experimental approaches as well as learn and employ rigorous quantitative analyses and statistical methods. The research will involve bench science as well as opportunities to present data in the form of posters and presentations and with suitable progress, opportunities to develop writing skills will also be offered.

The Sillitoe lab is a highly productive lab with a vibrant research community. The ideal candidate will be willing to join a fast-paced team of scientists that are highly focused on discovery science by using and developing cutting-edge tools and techniques. The position, therefore, requires a highly motivated individual that is willing to work in a dynamic team and willing to learn new skills.

Job Duties

  • Use cutting-edge techniques that are required to understand brain development, brain function and brain disease.
    • Approaches include:
      • in vivo electrophysiology
      • mouse maintenance
      • mouse genetics
      • tissue dissection
      • tissue histochemistry and immunohistochemistry
      • brightfield and fluorescence imaging
      • mouse behavioral approaches such as rotaord, footprinting, and gait analyses
      • deep brain stimulation therapy
      • data analysis using excel, MATLAB, and Spike2
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings.
  • Record keeping in notebooks, excel spreadsheets, and also will include regular back-up and organization of data onto external hard drives.
  • Initiate and complete research projects as discussed with Dr. Sillitoe.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.


Job Specific Requirements

  • Background knowledge in biology


Preferred Qualifications

  • An undergraduate level degree in any area of biology is preferred
  • Prior work with mice
  • Experience with basic programs - Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Prior research in the neurosciences would be a major plus
