SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Research Scientist position is to plan, organize, coordinate, direct and participate in scientific research projects. Assigns and reviews work of subordinates, determines specific goals or objectives to be attained, evaluates resulting research data and revises techniques or approaches to work problems. Supervises the design, development or adapting of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. Compiles, writes and submits reports to superior. Plans and supervises the training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment and safety procedures.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIESResearch Projects Analysis and Collaborations Plans, organizes, coordinates and participates in research projects under the direction of PI. Functions in an independent manner in the design and initiation of research experiments. Utilize initiative and inventive skills in planning and executing the details of experiments. Prepare manuscripts for scientific publications.

Laboratory Analysis of experimental tumor models
Perform laboratory analysis of gene and protein expression on experimental tumor models, and serum/plasma samples by immunohistochemical staining, PCR, immunofluorescence staining, gene and protein expression transcriptomics, tissue culture and cell based assays and other required biochemical analysis. Perform in vitro and in vivo studies on experimental therapeutics.

Chemo-genetic screens
Perform CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome editing at a single gene or genome scale basis and run CRISPR-Cas9 mediated chemo-genetic screens.

Metabolomics studies
Performs global metabolomics assays. Measures levels of metabolites in cells and tumor models.

Mechanistic studies
Performs detailed biochemical and cell biological mechanistic studies using in vitro and in vivo model systems, and applying genetic and pharmacologic tools to understanding mode of action of novel therapeutics

Collaborative Activities
Coordinate intramural and extramural collaborating research activities. Assist in the preparation of grant applications, especially, in performing experiments for collecting preliminary data. Present findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares scientific documents and manuscripts for publication.

Record Keeping and Progress Consultation
Data gathering and analysis
Keeps detailed, thorough notes of experiments in a lab notebook/electronic record in English, and routinely discusses data with supervisor.
Records and interprets results from in vitro and in vivo experiments. Maintain and update records of cell lines, analytical and tissue samples generated in the laboratory and received from other laboratories. Remains current on literature and techniques relating to the field of investigator.

Record keeping and data maintenance to meet supervisor, department / institute directives. Records experimental data by manually writing in a notebook or enter into a computer database. Collects and accurately calculate experimental data under the guidance of supervisor. Prepares graphs and charts by using computer.

General Lab Duties Assists with instrument maintenance and lab safety management. Assists with general tissue culture duty. Coordinate and execute disposal of hazardous waste. Participates in an "as needed basis" on projects and general lab functions as directed.

Other duties as assigned

Required Education:

Masters degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Required Experience:

Four years of experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred Experience/Skills:

CRISPR, Molecular biology/genomics experience, small animal studies, manuscripts and grant proposals experience.
