1 Global Discovery Chemistry Organization, working across all disease areas at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), is seeking a creative and curious analytical chemist with expertise in separation sciences to join the Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) Analytics and Separations Group in Cambridge, MA.

In partnership with discovery chemistry, our Separations Team tackles the ambitious task of purifying and characterizing a wide range of compounds, from traditional small molecules to novel conjugated biotherapeutics. Our team is dedicated to leveraging automation, instrumentation, and software technologies to continuously enhance our separations platform. We are seeking a highly motivated, passionate scientist with a strong background in separation sciences to investigate and provide solutions to purification challenges. You will work alongside other experts in an interdisciplinary environment where our mission is to deliver the next wave of innovative medicines and advance the field of pharmaceutical research. The successful applicant will lead our Separations team responsible in delivering compound purification and driving the development of innovative, robust, and efficient purification processes and technologies essential for the advancement of our diverse and extensive drug discovery portfolio.

Your Key Responsibilities Include:

* Managing the local Separations group and working with the global Separations community, including planning and developing a team of scientists, fostering growth opportunities, mentoring staff for their full potential. Responsibilities include developing Separations group strategies, being responsible for research laboratory management and planning, prioritizing projects and workload, serving as a scientific and technical expert and advisor, and maintaining a culture of innovation and project enablement. Additionally, the role involves preparing scientific and technical reports, delivering oral presentations, and publishing externally.
* Collaborating closely with medicinal and synthetic chemists to deliver purification projects and physicochemical property analysis by LC within the drug discovery portfolio, while driving advancements in analytical and separations technologies. Developing custom separation and analytical methods to address analytical challenges across various disease areas and diverse modalities, encompassing small molecules, peptides, and conjugated biotherapeutics.
* Establishing and leading innovation programs aimed at enhancing separations and analytical technologies, as well as optimizing workflows and process efficiencies throughout the entire project lifecycle, from conceptualization to experimental design and implementation.
* Applying a diverse range of analytical and preparative chromatographic instruments and technologies, including HPLC-MS, SFC-MS, NP-HPLC, flash chromatography, and preparative SFC.
* Using additional analytical methods and automation technologies such as CE, SEC, HIC, IEX, NMR, MS/MS, and Tecan automation to augment analytical and separations capabilities and overall efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

What You’ll Bring to the Role:

* Ph.D. with 6+ years of proven experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, Master's degree with 9+ years of industry experience, or Bachelor's degree with 12+ years of industry experience.
* Extensive expertise in modern chromatography methods, technologies, and a strong background in preparative HPLC and SFC purifications.
* Established scientific reputation in separation sciences, demonstrated through external publications and presentations.
* Solid understanding of drug discovery and development, with a particular focus on purification processes and technologies.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Proven success in project and people management, demonstrating effective leadership, motivation, and development of scientific teams.
* Collaborative and team-oriented leadership and management approach.
* Track record of getting results, leading innovation, and embracing change.
* Forward-thinking, organized, self-motivated, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
* Experience working in cross-functional, matrixed, and global research organizations.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $136,800 and $205,200 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
