Summary
The Department of Pediatrics Division of Tropical Medicine seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant to assist with oversight of a public health research project in Central America. This position will require laboratory testing of participant samples, troubleshooting laboratory methods, providing in-country training, and an excellent understanding of public health and epidemiology. Travel is required. The individual filling this position is expected to keep up to date with the scientific literature and aid in writing reports, manuscripts, and grants. We expect that the Research Assistant will practically and intellectually contribute to other complex research projects within the Division of Tropical Medicine as needs arise and contribute to a high-paced environment with an established team.

Job Duties
- Performs laboratory experiments relevant to identifying the burden of disease. Techniques for these projects include but are not limited to: cell culture maintenance, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and ELISA. These also include performing laboratory work in virology, such as viral titration assays to confirm exposures.
- Maintains a database of participant data.
- Evaluates and analyzes data and provides at least biweekly reports.
- Summarizes and presents research findings in lab meetings and local/national/international meetings.
- Establishes new research protocols and procedures as requested.
- Ensures quality control of laboratory procedures, including test validations, at BCM and at international study sites.
- Performs additional routine laboratory procedures to assist in the lab's research as requested.
- Maintains an accurate, up-to-date, organized, and legible lab notebook that records all data according to methods requested.
- Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format.
- Aids in maintenance of lab equipment and environment.
- Supervises, schedules and coordinates the activities of less experienced research staff.
- Works independently and in conjunction with others on the team, both at BCM and at our international study sites.
- Communicates assistance needed in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
- Three years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field.
- Proficient in Spanish
- Strong background in epidemiology, virology, molecular biology, cell biology and/or immunology.
- Strong organization skills, highly motivated, and career-oriented.
- Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work in a team.
