Job Description

$9.0 billion R&D spend to develop breakthrough medicines! We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to join our in vivo pharmacology team in the Cardiovascular and Metabolic (CVM) Disease Area at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) located in Cambridge, MA. Cardiometabolic disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. Our team is dedicated to the creation and development of innovative medicines to change this alarming statistic. We conceive, develop, validate, and employ pharmacological tools to evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel cardiometabolic drug candidates.

As an experienced and skilled lab-based surgeon and echocardiographer, you will work both independently and collaboratively in an inter-disciplinary setting to execute experiments in preclinical models of cardiovascular disease. You will generate rodent dietary or surgical models of cardiac dysfunction/heart failure, perform invasive hemodynamic assessments, and conduct multi-mode echocardiography including strain by speckle tracking and Doppler imaging. You will collect, analyze, interpret data and report cardiac structural and functional data in both written study reports and in team meetings. You will support drug discovery for heart failure and arrhythmia therapeutics, while broadening your knowledge in the field.

What you will be doing (key responsibilities):
• Independently generate rodent dietary or surgical models of cardiac dysfunction and heart failure.
• Conduct invasive hemodynamic assessments (PV loop) in said models
• Design, execute, analyze and document in vivo echocardiographic experiments in heart failure and/or arrhythmia models.
• Function as lead pharmacologist on drug discovery projects as appropriate.
• Establish new imaging techniques and approaches to support heart failure or arrhythmia studies
• Support drug discovery projects with pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) studies
• Present results in lab and department meetings
• Assist in the completion of research reports to support regulatory filings

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $107,200 and $160,800/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
