The National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites candidates with strong scientific and clinical credentials to apply for the position of Chief, Hematology Service, Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) at the NIH Clinical Center, Bethesda, MD. This is also a tenure-eligible position as Senior Investigator and candidates are expected to conduct clinical, translational and or basic research in addition to their clinical and administrative duties.

 

The NIH is the nation’s foremost federally-funded biomedical research institution. The NIH Clinical Center is the 200-bed hospital in which NIH intramural research protocols are conducted. The Hematology Service in the DLM, performs diagnostic hematology testing required for the care of Clinical Center patients and to support the clinical research activities conducted in the Clinical Center. The Hematology Service works with institute investigators in the design of research projects that require clinical laboratory collaboration and originates research designed to improve clinical laboratory diagnostic and monitoring techniques in hematology.

 

The selected candidate is expected to maintain oversight of all diagnostic hematology services provided by DLM in the Clinical Center and has direct responsibility for the planning and management of current and future diagnostic and investigative procedures in hematology, and coordination of all service-based research and development. Candidates must possess superior clinical and academic credentials, with proven supervisory acumen to be able to provide oversight of all hematology services provided throughout the Clinical Center. The Candidate must have an M.D. or equivalent medical degree, and be certified in pathology or internal medicine, with specialized training in hematopathology / hematology.

 

The candidate must have: (1) proven experience in hematology and hematopathology laboratory operations, including performing and interpreting laboratory test results, and provision of expert consultative services;  and (2) a record of accomplishment in research and training in the field of clinical or basic hematology.  Candidates with outstanding research accomplishments may be eligible for tenure within the NIH Intramural Research Program.

 

The Candidate must have working knowledge and experience in complying with the College of American Pathologists regulatory requirements for a clinical laboratory and the role of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA88) on a clinical laboratory operation.

 

Candidates must have an active medical license (in any of the United States). Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Nationals to apply.
