The Sainsbury Laboratory is a Research Institute dedicated to plant developmental biology.  It brings together specialists in the biological, physical, and mathematical sciences and encourages interdisciplinary collaborations for elucidating the regulatory systems underlying plant growth and development.

The Institute has excellent resources, administrative support, and core facilities, with state-of-the-art equipment including growth rooms, glasshouses, microscopy, and computing facilities. Our facilities are all supported by dedicated staff. There is a collaborative research ethos where diversity is welcomed, and Group Leaders can take risks in a supportive and collegial environment.

We are seeking to appoint a Group Leader, with imaginative research ideas to advance our understanding of plant development, who can both contribute to and benefit from the Institute's environment.  It is critical that the appointee actively engages in the Sainsbury Laboratory's collaborative ethos. It is also central to the Institute that Group Leaders actively assist all members of their team in career progression and excellent mentoring is expected.

We are looking for applicants with experimental plant development experience who are excited to be part of our interdisciplinary research environment. Applicants should have excellent promise for, or a proven record of research achievement in the field and provide strong evidence of their potential to make original and significant contributions to fundamental plant development research.

The position is open to applicants of any nationality and can be awarded across a broad range of seniority, from the equivalent of a starting Assistant Professor position to Full Professor level. Both postdocs looking to start a group and established Principal Investigators are welcome to apply.

The post provides a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, ample laboratory and office space, administrative support, and unrestricted research funds of £275,000 per annum funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. Group Leaders are also encouraged to apply for competitive research grants from other sources. Pending a rigorous peer-review process, the appointment is renewable in 5-year instalments. There is no overall limit to the number of potential renewals, with the first renewal being linked to tenured appointment to retirement age in the University.

Applications must be submitted electronically as pdf files and should include a cover letter, a full CV, a research proposal for the initial five-year period as Group Leader and the names of at least three referees. Guidance for preparing an application is given in the Further Particulars.
