The Dana Farber Cancer Institute is seeking a highly motivated, full-time Lab Manager to supervise work in a CLIA certified clinical research laboratory focused on Fanconi Anemia. This individual will be involved in the diagnosis and research of this rare genetic disease. Responsibilities include the coordination and testing of patient samples for diagnosis and assisting with the Director’s administrative responsibilities in the laboratory and supervision of the technical staff to manage and maintain good laboratory practices. Responsibilities

  • Manage the coordination and testing of patient samples for diagnosis by a chromosomal instability test using clastogens (mitomycin C and diepoxybutane). 
  • Ensure that all CLIA certified protocols and standards are being met in the lab.
  • Maintain long and short-term cell culture.
  • Culture and harvest clinical specimens.
  • Prepare diagnostic slides.
  • Analyze chromosomal breakage.
  • Utilize computer image analysis.
  • Perform karyotyping and report results.
  • Record and analyze data.
  • Prepare laboratory solutions.

Operations

Laboratory

  • Institute, maintain, and improve standard procedures for laboratory efficiencies, including monitoring laboratory expenditure.
  • Responsible for overseeing efficient inventory maintenance and ordering.
  • Responsible, directly, or indirectly, for care, repair, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure good laboratory practice directly or indirectly through supervised activities of technicians and trainees.

Scientific

  • Assist PI in monitoring, enabling, and facilitating collaborations with other programs.
  • Active intellectual involvement in research projects is encouraged.

Administrative

  • Managed efficient and effective administration of laboratory protocols and research materials/stocks.
  • Train and manage staff scientists and research technicians and guide recruitment of technical staff.
  • Responsible for annual reviews of technical staff performance.
  • Assist PI with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees.
  • Ensures all lab staff are compliant with DFCI, NIH and sponsor mandatory trainings and the Joint Commission Standards and Practices.
  • Exceptional people management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task to enable many concurrent projects in a complex, fast paced environment.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort in working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints; openness to new ideas.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Oversees needs of 2-3 lab members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline required; Master’s or PhD degree preferred.
  • Specialty in cytogenetics is required.
  • ASCP certification is required.
  • Must be proficient in basic cytogenetics:  scanning and microscopic analysis of chromosomes.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in management of research laboratory in the field of biological sciences.
  • Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance, and record keeping.
