Summary

The ideal candidate will have in-depth expertise in the area of solid tumor modeling and orthotopic cell implantation techniques. The successful applicant will be responsible for performing surgeries as part of the day to day operations of our comprehensive mouse colony which forms part of our world-class clinical and translational research program in the Brain Tumor Research Centre

Job Duties

  • Support our expanding efforts to implement highly predictive in vitro and orthotopic in vivo tumor models of solid tumors for the testing of existing and newly-developed therapeutics.
  • Play a role in developing and implementing new technologies crucial to the mouse colony in order for the lab to maintain its scientific and technological edge.
  • Contribute to the development of strategic goals and be responsible for ongoing projects; must be able to carry out responsibilities with a high degree of independence.
  • Provide leadership and training within the team on technical matters related to the mouse colony and associated research projects.
  • Perform intracranial surgery on rodents under anasthesia using a stereotactic frame
  • Resection of tumors in survival surgeries and perform routine in vivo imaging of animals
  • Assist graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research associates to develop new surgical applications and techniques in rodents
  • Monitor, assess and treat experimental animals in line with existing SOPs
  • Routine drug preparation and administration to experimental animals and healthy controls
  • Receive, process, archive and retrieve biological samples.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Mouse handling experience with expertise in intravenous, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, as well as blood collection and sterile dissection techniques
  • Experience with rodent survival surgery is highly preferred
  • Experience with other procedures (e.g., cardiac puncture, perfusions) is preferred but not required
  • Experience with multi-parameter flow cytometry is desired but not required
  • Experience handling multiple biological samples at any given time, and following standard operational protocols (SOPS) as well as being able to write SOPs
  • Self-motivated, proactive, highly organized, and able to efficiently prioritize work in response to multiple demands.
  • Proven ability to both work as part of a team and independently
  • Detailed and precise record keeping are essential skills.
  • Graduate of a Veterinary Technology Certificate or Diploma Program or BSc or MSc preferred
