ROLE SUMMARY

The Director of RNA Therapeutics and Synthetic Biology Innovation will provide scientific and strategic leadership for RNA Therapeutic discovery and novel modality platform development. The role oversees a highly motivated group of scientists with diverse expertise within the Biomedicines Design (BMD) group, Pfizer's large molecule discovery unit.

In close partnership with cross-functional disciplines within BMD and Research Units across Pfizer, the candidate will help set strategies to enhance discovery platform for RNA- and Protein-based therapeutics, be a key driver of scientific innovation and technical excellence, apply cutting-edge synthetic biology and AI/Machine Learning tools to create and optimize novel RNA and protein designs that lead to optimal therapeutic profiles.

In this context, the candidate will interface effectively with project teams, BMD LT members, RUs and Partner Line key stakeholders to provide key input on strategy, and timely execution of the therapeutic portfolio.

Ideal candidate for this role requires prior industry experience in therapeutic discovery research, preferentially in RNA discovery, established track record working with multifunctional teams outside of a reporting structure, presenting research and strategy to diverse audiences, and publishing research findings.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide scientific leadership and strategic vision for RNA therapeutic discovery and novel modality platform improvement.

• Set objectives for the group, develop solutions to address complex operational and technical challenges.

• Responsible for setting project priorities in the group aligned with portfolio deliverables for BMD and RUs.

• Work closely with BMD project team leaders, RU partners, BMD LT members, and other key stakeholders to align program needs and ensure timely program advancement.

• Champion innovation. Partner closely with other BMD disciplines and RU biologists to progress technology development initiatives and discovery strategy. May serve as BMD engineering lead/technical lead.

• Serve as a primary scientific liaison, represent the group and BMD on cross-functional project teams, and internal/external collaborations.

• Build effective teams; understand large group dynamics and how to effectuate interventions

• Develop individual scientific leaders; serve as an effective facilitator and coach

• Responsible for local line operational management and safety compliance. Work closely with BMD business strategy and operations for opex and capital budget planning.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong knowledge of RNA structure, RNA biology, design, and engineering of nucleic acid-based gene delivery of therapeutics and vaccines
  • Demonstrated creativity of using synthetic biology approach to solve complex biological problems in mammalian systems
  • Experience of providing scientific leadership for projects in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven track record of project advancement and delivery.
  • This position requires a proactive, pragmatic, flexible person with excellent leadership qualities, strategic thinking, communication & presentation skills
  • Able to effectively direct and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.
  • PhD in biology, biochemistry, immunology, or a related field.
  • >10 years industry experience in pre-clinical research


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Practical experience with RNA technologies (mRNA, self-amplifying mRNA, circular RNA) preferred
  • Working knowledge of humoral and cellular immunology a plus
