The Neurobiological Mechanisms of Aggression lab at McLean Hospital seeks a highly motivated individual to assist in managing NIH-funded research.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:  Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

 

The Neurobiological Mechanisms of Aggression lab at McLean Hospital seeks a highly motivated individual to assist in managing NIH-funded research on Drosophila molecular and circuit mechanisms. The research program employs sophisticated genetic and imaging technologies, including the fly connectome, genetic perturbations, and automated behavioral measurements. An ideal candidate should be self-directed, independent, highly motivated to supervise laboratory operations, and have extensive experience working with Drosophila.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

  • Multi-task several experiments simultaneously and efficiently manage time, and be flexible and well-organized in managing multiple tasks.
  • Train students on how to use the equipment in the lab, how to do the experiments, and how to clean up (including all the safety regulations)
  • Coaching, supervising, students, assigning tasks and aiding with experiments.
  • Coordinates the utilization of lab resources with other labs
  • Prepare buffers and solutions used in the lab
  • Managing chemical waste
  • Responsible for oversight of all lab supply and equipment, purchasing and maintenance
  • Conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects and operation of research equipment.
  • Keep detailed genetic records of insect stocks and routine fly husbandry.
  • The creativity to develop new algorithms and learning paradigms for using machine vision and learning for scientific discovery.
  • Practical knowledge of the current state-of-the-art in machine vision and learning. 
  • The commitment and dedication to develop robust, working systems. 
  • Interest in applications of computer science to biology, and the new discoveries they enable. 
  • Strong programming expertise in MATLAB and C, C++, CUDA, Java, or Python. 

 

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

 

  • Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations
  • Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects
  • Must have aptitude for technical problem solving
  • Ability to effectively supervise others
  • Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research
  • Must possess aptitude for budget management

 

 

 

EDUCATION: 

  • BS (preferred but not required may be compensated with years of work experience)

 

 

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years of research laboratory experience preferably in a fly lab.

  • Supervisory experience
  • Computer scientists with expertise in machine vision and learning interested in both developing new algorithms, a plus

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable):  List the number of FTEs supervised.

 

  • Has direct responsibility for management of all lab personnel
