Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are currently seeking early career doctoral-level career scientists/engineers with research interest and experience in computational physics to join our Lagrangian Codes group (XCP-1). In this role, you will assist in developing and maintaining large scale, massively parallel Multiphysics codes.

Responsibilities:

  • Researching and developing applied physics and engineering models
  • Implementing methods into production codes
  • Testing and validating methods and educating users as they adopt these methods
  • Mentoring junior staff, students and post-doctoral colleagues

 

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in physics, engineering, applied mathematics or a related field
  • Professional knowledge of or experience in one or more of the following areas: computational fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, materials science, radiation hydrodynamics, plasma physics, turbulence, high explosives and/or nuclear physics and engineering
  • Knowledge and/or experience or development of multi-physics scientific codes, including software engineering practices and user support
  • Demonstrated proficiency with FORTRAN, C and/or C++
  • Demonstrated scientific productivity through publications and presentations

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment with MPI and UNIX
  • Experience with Lagrangian or Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) hydrodynamics and other physics (or multi-physics) in that context
  • Experience developing code on high-performance and heterogeneous architectures, such as GPUs and/or ARM processors
  • Demonstrated impact on programmatic deliverables for the nuclear weapons program
  • Active Q clearance is strongly preferred
  • Preference may be given for a Ph.D. in physics, engineering or applied mathematics, or related field
